Whats the best topbox for 1150?

As above really, already got panniers (came with bike) but now need a top box for storage and to add comfort for my bird. Cant pay/wont pay metal mule prices. But want a decent one, is there one with padding on so pillion has more comfort..

What size ? what do intend carrying in it ? would you want to put one crash helmet in it or two ? etc etc.

Any of the Givi ones have the option of a backrest, I use the Givi Maxia 52 litrel jobbie, they are quite lumpy price-wise new but often come up for sale on here and sensible money. Exepect to pay between £100-£130 for one of them.

Smaller 41 litre ones will be cheaper. I've had both and though I'm not a lover of top boxes have one for work and now I have a pillion it makes all the difference to their comfort. Did a damned fine job of limiting damage to the bike on a recent off too.

What panniers do you already have? If they're BM ones tin / plastic, it may be convenient to get the BM one so you have a one key system.

GSA Top Box on GS

The aluminium top box and plate from a GSA will fit a GS. Just need a small bit of ali 130mm with 2 holes to make up an extra bracket.

Givi's come up for sale on here often (got mine off here) but they can also be got on eBay, here though they are most likely to come with the mounting plate for a GS which you need along with the box and its not the cheapest of item either.

I have a Kappa K48 (48 litres, will fit 2 full face lids and sundries). Kappa boxes are the same as Givi, Givi's daughter apparently set up this brand? I have a back rest fitted but some pillions complain about being pushed too far forward, still comfy without and no chance of flying backward. I fitted the optional brake light too which is really effective.
I don't really like the look of any topboxes but they are a very useful and necessary evil.

I agree, they are ugly, but bloody practical when used without panniers to commute around towns and motorways.

Will you be keeping the bird in the top box at the same time as the helmets as there aren't many that will take two helmets and a cage. I suppose it would depend on what breed of bird you have and what type of cage you keep it in.

I don't think you'll find anyone lusting over the look of a top box but for some because they carry pillions and need more capacity or comfort for their passenger, or others who commute and couldn't gain any advantage if they did so with wide loads from panniers fitted, choose to use them.

No luggage makes the bike look better, it does make the bike more usable though, now get back to hoovering your drivers mats and tidying your glovebox.

The only way of getting 'proper' security is by using a decent ally box with appropriate hasps and padlock.

I would be reluctant to trust any pannier or top box as a serious security measure

I, if needs must, use my right hand system pannier(1150GS) for a lid and never anything more valuable, laptops cash cameras etc

i use a Givi 52 litre top box when required, rather use this than a cage
