What's the collective wisdom on the MS Surface?

I would never knowingly buy anything from Microsuck. If say for instance I needed a new laptop, I'd ditch Windoze and install a version of Linux.

I recently bought a tablet, a 7" Lenovo, it's operating system is Android and can't fault the thing. Dual SIM slots (one 3G & one 2G), more than enough memory for me to run all the Apps I need, bluetooth, WiFi and micro SD card slot. :thumb2

Depends a whole lot on what you're comparing it to, and what you want to achieve...

Having been a long time user of Android tablets I recently purchased a Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro (tablet) running Windows 8 Pro and have been hugely impressed. Far more usable for business use than an Android tablet. Much of this business class functionality is lost in the Surface RT which is after all meant to compete against iPad and Android tablets in the home consumer market but what it lacks in processing power the RT makes up for in battery life. There are cheaper, better specified tablets available running RT than the Surface so it's worth looking around at the competition.

Good point, well made.

My laptop is on its last lallies. I use it to internet and Skype mostly. There's other stuff like Mapsource (which I accept I'm probably not going to get on a tablet) and the occassional Word/pdf document etc.

Pro. RT won't run earlier Windows programmes, only the apps.

Probably a wise choice. I heard that a 32GB Surface only gives you 16GB useable storage. The rest is taken up by the operating system. Not very impressive.

Mine had a 64gb SSD and that was nowhere near big enough. After owning it for only a couple of weeks I was down to 5Gb of free space on the C: drive even after moving all my user data to the SD card. Have now swapped out the 64Gb for a 256Gb SSD drive. It's easy enough to do and really makes my Windows 8 tablet hugely more usable.
