OK, so help me out here 'cos I just don't get it :nenau

From what little I know, there are two luggage systems from BMW for the R1200GS and GSA's.

You can have the Vario system of boxes, rack and pannier hangers or you can have the alloy system of boxes, rack and pannier racks. So far so good ?

Why do both systems from BMW require adaptor plates to fit the top boxes to the respective luggage racks ?

Why weren't the racks and boxes just designed to fit straight together

How else do they increase their profit margins?

So us that it ..... just another money making rip off

Why stop there then ? Why not make adaptors for everything from light bulbs to tyres ? or shouldn't I have mentioned that in case it gives someone at BMW more money making ideas ? :blast

I guess because they wanted the ADV topbox to sit lower than the previously-designed (and in service for 2 yrs) raised mount.

Not money-spinning, I don't think.

You may have a point, if both models were developed at the same time........................ but they weren't.

In the case of the ADV top boxes they can fit onto two bikes the R1200GSA and the F800GS so as the rack is different for each bike an adapter plate is required;)

It still doesn't really cut it, why do BOTH bikes need an adaptor plate.

Is it just out of fairness, to both bikes owners, that the top box won't even fit one of the bikes without an adaptor.

I think it is possible to mount the ADV top box adapter in place of the pillion seat as well as its normal position.
