What's the difference between Storm Black Metallic and Sapphire Black Metallic paint?

:D I expect a lot of comedy answers here.

Seriously though, do the metal flakes in Sapphire Black (as used on the Triple Black series) appear blueish in colour, whereas they are more silver in the Storm Black paint? Is that the difference!?

It might seem like a trivial question, but I am thinking of changing the tank panel and beak on my (Frozen Blue Metallic) 2015 GS for another original 'period' colour (Storm Black or Racing Red, probably) and haven't been able to source both parts in Storm Black (although I can get them in Sapphire Black).

All input (especially with photos :) ) welcomed!

I have no idea and in the event no one else provides a sensible answer, it may pay to email one of the paint suppliers. I was thinking about looking at the colour chits in Halfords or a paint supply shop, but I’d be surprised if they have the BMW motorcycle colours. That said they may be the same as the car colours?

So, having some time free and being a nosey buggar, I’ve looked up the paint codes.

Black Sapphire Metallic is 475

Blackstorm Metallic is M46

Halfords stock the 475, seems it used on the cars. Can’t find a listing for M46 in car colours.

Hope that helps?

Thanks for your input, folks!

I was having difficulty deciding on whether to get metallic black panels for the bike, or Racing Red ones (like nearly all other GSs ;) ). As luck would have it, I won an eBay auction for a red front beak today and then found a matching tank panel at a decent price. So, the bike will be converted to red soon and the mystery of the subtle variations of the BMW's metallic black paints can linger on ...

I assume if you do this you need to contact the DVLC to get your registration document updated?

Yes, that is my assumption, too. I don't have the new registration document yet, as I've only just bought the bike, but if it lists 'blue' as the main colour of the bike I can apply to change it online or by filling in part of the V5C and sending it back. It shouldn't be too hard (I hope) ;) .

Thanks for pointing it out though :) .

If you ever need, I can recommend rs paint.

They matched 1980's Honda's, Triumphs for me no problem, they also did touch up, two sizes of aerosol tins and spray paint.

"Hello DVLA, I've changed the colour of my bike from Sapphire Black to Storm Black".

"Thank you for letting us know, Sir".

:P

It's red now anyway and the new V5C reflects that.

The old panels have been sold now to (mostly) cover the cost of the new ones - job done!
