Recently got my GS and I went for a 100 mile ride yesterday, took me about 3 hours and a bit as I was going at a steady pace and still running the bike in.

My question is the last 20 miles really started to kill my arse and got quite uncomfortable, I'm about 13st 8lbs if that has any bearing

So how far can you guys go on the standard seat before you need a break ?

Does the seat break in or will my backside get more used to it or do you simply have to take breaks or upgrade your seat ?

I have the new triple black which is supposed to have an upgraded seat witha smidgen of memory foam so should be slightly better than the standard seat

You didn't mention what height setting you had it on. Try it on highest at the front and lowest at the rear. Worked for me.

standard seat cut my legs at the top, so i got the rally seat but yeah 3 hours is as much as my ass would handle.

I am still trying to find a replacements seat which will make the "pain full arse" syndrome bearable. Yes I am aware of all options, is any of them available as an "test before you buy" option? None that I am aware of!

Thanks for the tip, I have it on low at the front and back, will try flipping it to high at front and low at rear setting and see if it helps.

Hi, did 349 miles one quick stop for petrol. By far the longest time sat on a bike, just over 6 hours. Had my seat set at high front low rear. I find that best for touring.

There will be others with iron butts that have lasted a lot longer in the saddle but that ride was enough for me.

Locally I have the seat set low front and rear, I find it gives slightly more confidence when putting the feet down in traffic.

I did Aberdeen to just south of Bordeaux with only a hour and a half stop whilst on the ferry it was 2200 miles and took 24 hours ish and it was ok.

I was riding 2 up with the mrs on the back. She barely lasted an hour before busting out the airhawk. She's really skinny so I think having a fat arse like me definitely helps :)

The was the bike set to 2up with all the fully loaded boxes all round riding 2up with the suspension set to hard.

I don't think it'll break in but you should develop somewhat of a tolerance which'll extend your riding time until discomfort sets in. I recently did a 2 week ride up in Canada and while the seat wasn't horrible for me I was squirming by the time my riding bud needed gas for his GS. I have your same seat which I bought as an upgrade over what came stock on my GSA and while it's a tad better were I to do it over again I wouldn't buy it. Instead I'd go with a kit from Seat Concepts ($215) which supplies replacement foam that is firmer, wider, dished opposed to crowned, and w/o the forward slope, along with a new cover that fits. Also included is a matching cover for your stock rear seat foam so they visually match. http://seatconcepts.com/products#!/...3-15-Water-Boxer/p/39452716/category=14368090
I recently bought their kit for my Yamaha FJ-09, it was a breeze to install, looks great, is firmer and much more comfortable. My friend bought a SC for his 2014 GS and it's just as nice as the one for my FJ-09 and much better than BMW's upgraded seat that I paid $400 for.

Thanks for that

I do remember from my road cycling days that you had to break your arse into the saddle not the saddle into your arse. The only way to stop it hurting was to ride more often and ride further. If you stopped for any period of time you had to start over

I was walking like John Wayne when I got off after 3+ hours

LOL.

Like Stew says you'll slowly get accustomed to it, at least to an extent. But I find a better seat will be more comfortable for a longer time to begin.

replaced my seat with a softer refilled seat purchased from this site. very dubious at first, but i managed a continuos 500 mile trip non stop except for fuel with no problems. The stock seat the best i could manage was about 200 to 250.

I brought a used 2014 GS at the beginning of the year and was looking forward to taking to the Black Forrest, Germany as last time I went I was on an MV Agusta F4R and my arse suffered! but the GS was no better, which was very surprising as its sold as a touring bike? so whilst in Germany I went to the Touratech factory and purchased there seat and had a nice comfy ride home!

When I got back I did see that BMW have the cheek to sell a 'comfort' seat for the GS, so they know there is a problem and its just another way of making a few more bucks!! surely a comfortable seat should come as standard equipment??

Agreed, it should. I bought a touratech comfort low seat for my GSA and although EXTORTIONATE money, it is comfy :D
