WHATS THIS ANNUAL SERVICE

Just been reading through a few threads and an annual service keeps coming up . i ride an r1200gs which is due for its 6000 mile service even though its now done 7000 miles , surley everything that needs doing will be done on the 6000 service , if there is an annual service does it effect your warrenty if you dont have it .

They suggest you have the service carried out even if your bike is not covering much mileage - hence the time factor (anually) rather than just mileage intervals...
The warranty thing should not depend upon who carries out your servicing, but it is worth having it done properly.
The 1200 handbook suggests warranty claims (even after a fixed period) will be viewed more favourably if there is evidence of frequent BM servicing...

The recommendation for an annual service relates to time-dependent issues, in particular brake fluid.
BMW recommend that it be changed every year.
While the evidence is debatable, there is some reason to believe that the servo / ABS system is susceptible to impaired performance and potentially even failure if the brake fluid is not up to spec.
I used to work in a BMW motorcycle service department, administered the warranty system, and recall a number of failed ABS control units where the cause could not be determined. In some cases, and only some, the brake fluid had not been changed within the specified time. We also found contamination in some systems.
Sorry, but I don't recall whether not completing the annual service invalidated the warranty.
I change the brake fluid on my '04 model GS annually, just because I don't know any different, and I figure it's worth the money to be sure.

Like many other subjects it only comes up time and again because people cant be bothered to read all the earlier posts. Not having a "go" or anything - thats simply what happens.

The 6000 mile service will cover what little remains to be done of the annual service now the fluid replacement interval has been changed. If your dealer attempts to charge extra, contest it.
