Anyone know what this is for. This is my third GS and I've never noticed it before. It looks like a bracket to fit something, maybe puncture kit/inflator or something. It is behind the right hand front panel and the picture is taken from the front of the bike between the fork legs.

Hello tspivey,
This has been asked on a number of occasions in the past and the consensus of opinion seems to point toward a location for a carbon filtration canister fitted for the USA market.
I don't doubt this to be true and can only state the I have used the space for the location of a HID ballast on one of my bikes. It is a warm place being directly above a cylinder so careful thought must be given to anything else that you may wish to place there.

I believe only Kalifornia requires it nevertheless the other 49 states get it as well. Like Allan mentioned it is a good place to mount something.

Thanks so far, though I'm not convinced yet. The picture by Clifton shows a lower, forward mounted position almost down to the engine bars.

Just a tip State bike and year when asking questions :rob

The picture by Clifton is of a GSA fuel tank which has an inset space for the canister. Not the same fitment on the smaller tank fitted to a GS.
