Whats this then

Any body know what this is. I have seen a few of these, but havent got a clue what it is. Looks like a large spirit level with fold down legs. I can say its German and WW2.

Looks to me like the equivalent to the British "L9 bar mine" set it up along the side of a road, in bushes, Or in the road/track....Booom !
The British bar mine would throw a MBT onto its roof.

Could be, but I don't think it lived in the box it's sitting on, it's too long. And what are the (datum?) lines at either end for?

Not being contradictory, just thinking out loud :)
 
I would "think" it's used for calibrating or checking prism alignment in optical range finders ....:nenau

Where

French museums. Seen them in 3 or 4 but they never have a label stating what they are.
