What's this wire then?

Cracked on with the additional loom work on the bike today (2003 R1150GS Adventure with servo removed) and discovered a disconnected black and grey wire under the tank...

The end of the wire disappearing to the left of shot just ends in bare wire, as if a connector has been pulled off. It appears to be an earth - anybody know what it might be for please?

Probably factory fitted alarm system, though I might be wrong. Try a search for alarm.

The grey/black wire appears to go to the 12 way white connector. Does it?

If it does what is the colour of the corresponding wire on the other side of the white 12 way connector. From the picture it looks like the green/blue with yellow dots, which is instrument lights.

Thanks for the input.

It has a separate connector which allows the wire to split it into two. Bike's in the garage, so I can't recheck at the moment - I'll dig out the wiring diagram & see if I can spot it there...

I doubt the wiring diagram will help. Yours is a twin spark, so you will need the R1150GS (model'00) plus the updated diagrams covering the wiring modifications up to 2005.

My guess is that it goes to the green/blue with yellow dots. If you unplug the single connector, your instrument lights might go out ( assuming you have ignition on ) if I'm right, then the alarm might have put 12v on the grey/black wire which is out of shot to power your head light when the alarm went off.

I could be talking bollocks. It all depends on what wire the grey/black connects too.

On reflection, the twin spark adventure came with the option of factory fitted fog lights, and it might be a factory fitted link to enable power pick off for the fog lights.

You stated in your earlier post that the grey/black wire was at earth potential. I suspect that when you measured it you were getting a low resistance and not zero resistance , as the resitance path was through the instrument bulbs. If you measure for voltage, then with ignition on my guess is the grey/black wire will have 12 volts on it.

Grey Black wire is on the sidelamp circuit

Use a bulb type tester and it should illuminate with sidelamps and dip and main on but not when the lights are switched off (being a twin spark you may have that rather novel idea of always on lights )
