Scaffolding

Masons, when they start upon a building,

Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,

Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done

Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be

Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall

Confident that we have built our wall.

It's a summarised version of a longer poem. :thumb2

Believe it or not, I'm not normally a poem person :mmmm but after watching Invictus (with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon) I did a lot of research into William Henley. I've even found his grave and plan to visit it one day during a bike trip.

They **** you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were ****ed up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.
 
This poem i have posted before,however i must admit to finding it very moving so make no appologies for posting it again.I am not sure who wrote it but they knew what the loss of a dog can mean to a person.

If it should be that i grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad,I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

We visited the place he wrote it a few years ago. The echoes of the war are still there - well worth stopping off if you're in the area.
 
If these 3 examples of slam poetry by Taylor Mali have no effect on you... then you must be dead inside because I think they are beautifully brilliant and tearfully tingly.

Digging

Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; as snug as a gun.

Under my window a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:

Where he was digging.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft

To scatter new potatoes that we picked

By God, the old man could handle a spade,
Just like his old man.

My grandfather could cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, digging down and down
For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mold, the squelch and slap
Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.

So Many Different Lengths of Time

How long is a man’s life, finally?
Is it a thousand days, or only one?
One week, or a few centuries?
How long does a man’s death last?
And what do we mean when we say, ‘gone forever’?

Adrift in such preoccupations, we seek clarification.
We can go to the philosophers,
but they will grow tired of our questions.
We can go to the priests and the rabbis
but they might be too busy with administrations.

So, how long does a man live, finally?
And how much does he live while he lives?
We fret, and ask so many questions –
then when it comes to us
the answer is so simple.

A man lives for as long as we carry him inside us,
for as long as we carry the harvest of his dreams,
for as long as we ourselves live,
holding memories in common, a man lives.

His lover will carry his man’s scent, his touch:
his children will carry the weight of his love.
One friend will carry his arguments,
another will hum his favourite tunes,
another will still share his terrors.

And the days will pass with baffled faces,
then the weeks, then the months,
then there will be a day when no question is asked
and the knots of grief will loosen in the stomach,
and the puffed faces will calm.
