My brother's desk top PC.....Not turned on for approx' one month. Turns on, works fine, and notices 'Windows Auto Updates' downloading. After the download, he cannot connect to the 'net, and decides to do 'system restore' to a point before the 'Windows Update'........Still with this ?.....

When he came back to the PC, there was just a blue screen. Tried re-booting, but all we get is the 'Windows xp' screen....then the 'Welcome' screen, then the blue screen again......No icons....No toolbars etc......Just the mouse curser.....:(

Any ideas anyone?........Pretty please........

When the machine boots try hitting F8 and then "Last Configuration that worked" (or whatever the wording is). If that fails try "Safe Mode". If you can get in that way try the System restore or look at recent updates applied and remove them one by one until a proper reboot works ok.

Is the puter fairly old and does it make strange whirring and clicking sounds???

You might find that the Hard Disk is goosed and if this is the case, assuming you have all the disks and so on - maybe a trip to your nearest puter shop to buy a new HD is required or perhaps a trip to the Recycling centre if its old and unserviceable??
