Just around the corner from me is a KTM dealer and as I need a new Tourance rear, I went to see how much they'd charge for one, fitted and balanced. The surprise came when the guy said they couldn't balance wheels that came from a single-sided swinging arm setup. Since they were busy, and their price without balancing was a tad high, I left without asking what the balancing problem was. Anyone know? :nenau

Looks like Balderstone's next week, then.

Cheers

BMW rear wheels are held onto the final drive by 3 4 or 5 wheel studs. Most bikes have a central hole in the wheel for the rear axel. Normal bike tyre balancing equipment is designed to work by spinning the wheel via the central hole – hence BMW wheels don’t fit on the equipment. Some wheel balancing machines will accept a BMW rear – I’ve certainly had my rear tyre changed at universal tyres before and they were able to balance the tyre so you don’t have to visit a BMW dealer to get it done.

Just curious but I was with Firebird in Morocco when he had a rear tyre changed in Morocco for €1 not including balancing.

My question is; If he had had some weights is there a way he could have balanced the wheel 'manually'?

I just had my rear tyre changed and they put the wheel on the car wheel balancing machine to do it. One thing I have noticed on several new bikes including mine that is no balance weights on the rear wheels but there is on the front, has anyone else noticed this?

mine the same new 07 bike, weights on front nothing on rear.

Just had a new rear tyre fitted yesterday by TekMotive in Hertfordshire - they certainly had no problems balancing the rear wheel using a dymanic balancer.

I have to say that I was alos pretty impressed by the way the old tyre was removed and the new tyre fitted - their 'tyre-levering' machine runs very close to, but doesn't touch, the rim edge.

Recommended.

Tyre balancing tool

Couple of years back I bought a spindle type setup to do the balancing at home.

I paid £25 for it and only used it once - my local tyre dealer can now do my balancing.

Anyone interested in buying? I`m in the NE (near Stockton)and would want purchaser to see before they buy

For the last 20 years or so I have balanced BMW wheels using a simple spindle balancer in which a rod is inserted through the center hole in the wheel and the rod is supported on each end by sealed bearing steel wheels. It works great. Some of the wheels require that the rod be shimmed to account for the difference in the diameter of the rod and the hole in the wheel. My new 07 GS has a much larger center hole so I will need to come up with a new method to shim the rod. I'll probably us a large socket.

Here's a solution...

After years of having various shops fumble around with mixed results, I now do my own with this:
Wheel balancer
Note, there is an adapter for the R12GS rear wheel.
