Wheel balancing

Not at all sunshine. When I speak, I speak from knowledge.

Whereas you are clearly experienced. As they say, never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I bow down to your experience, quick get back to the village before they notice you’re missing

So full of judgement, so little knowledge.

Right, just been out and checked mine.

I had the original Anakee 3s replaced at the weekend with Tourance Next and dynamically balanced.

The following is with the valve at the top of the wheel and assuming the marking FE5 and FE10 on the balance weights means 5grams and 10grams respectively. Bike has wire wheels with TPMS fitted

The front has the red dot lined up with the valve and has 60g of weight split between the two outsides of the rim at approximately 180deg from the valve. This is almost exactly the same position as the original balance weights (don't know what the original balance weights were)

The rear has the red dot at approximately 15deg from the valve and has 35g of weight in the centre of the rim at approximately 160deg. No balance weights on the rim from new (no abnormal vibration felt)

I have not had chance to check these on the bike yet, but hopefully all will be well.

My 2017 GSA had no balancing weights on the rear wheel from new. Strange, as I’ve never known a wheel to be so perfectly balanced as to not need balancing weights. Swapped the Anakees off at the end of their life and had PR4 Trails fitted front and back. The fitter wasn’t equipped to balance the rear wheel. Done about 3K miles on the new tyres and haven’t noticed any oscillations or vibrations. Neither did I experience anything bad on the Anakees.

Ive just removed the OE EXPs from my 2012 TC and fitted std Tourances. There was no weight on the original rear, and the new rear didn’t need any either!! Fitter was well surprised. And I’ve got sensors too. Not ridden on them yet as I have my 850 for this time of year, although they’ll get an outing for it’s MOT this week.

Thanks for checking Vic and Dumptruck, my stock rear wheel imbalanced by almost two ounces..... say 50 grams almost opposite the valve is not unusual then, but not completely typical either. And I imagine spoke wheels are likely to be off or vary more.

If no tyre fitter in your area has one, just buy one. A BMW rear wheel balance adapter is simple enough and doesn't cost that much. If you know anyone else that rides a BMW go together and everyone split the cost and share the thing. Or buy it yourself and loan it to your friends "for free", every time they return it they will likely bring with a few beers or bottle of wine.

I bought the adapter when I had a GS and it was around £20. The balancing tool was only around £100 and is very easy to use.

I read on hear recently that someone balances their wheel without the tyre and fits weights internally. May give this a go next time

I agree Steve, balance wheels themselves at the first tyre change and leave those weights on. But *not* on the inside where they'll likely spin off.

Have you tried this? I only ask as I emailed them asking if it would fit the LC cast wheel and they didn't know :)

No, I was thinking of buying one, I assume it will fit as it says BMW single sided wheels and as the fitting flange is the same for both cast and spoked wheels I would think it will fit.

I will be doing this next time I change a tyre. I normally leave the weights on until I balance them because in several instances no changes were needed.

I have a spare adapter i made to use on the standard spindle balancer so the rear is done like a front,
It is a simple idea one piece that pushes into the wheel that i loaned to a motorcycle dealer for a year until they got a fancy machine,
I could make some more, for fellow tossers,
they are cheap to make compared to the Abba one,
Pm me for more info photos, as i struggle to put them on here,
Roamer,

Roamer,

Hi Roamer, if you could PM me more info and photos that’d be a great help. Cheers

Ditto too. I have a static balancing rig. I have lost a vital part of my bead breaker - a now-demolished garden wall with handy holes in it as the lever fulcrum.

I’ve had a few tyres which haven’t needed any balance weights. I can’t see why a car tyre balancing machine cannot be used to balance a GS rear wheel. Car wheels have a large hole in the centre which is the same as a GS wheel.
