Oh lordy, made a big mistake today and decided to clean me wheels.

Look even worse than before, patches of grime next to pitted alloy. Were they all supplied bare and uncoated ?

Anybody had em stripped and polished/coated/painted ?

phil

95 1100gs

Same story, had mine replaced after 12 months, within the warranty, due to rusty balckended spokes and slight pitting of the rims. These new ones are baring up a bit better. I Spray them with WD40 after i wash them, (makes the brakes weird but stops the discs rusting) and then a few months later when i can be arsed to, i give it another wash and the process starts again.
Happy cleaning. Get used to it or get some cast wheels and stciky rubber

Sorry mate, you let them go too far......
kept clean they are no problem but if you leave them too long them you have a hard but NOT impossible job to clean them.
Sorry to say it is no pain no gain syndrome. so get um off and start sweating.
the exersize will do you good.
all the best,
Barrie

I've had em off to clean but its virtually impossible to clean them effectively. Even my old zx9's wheels were easier to clean up (and the finish on these was crap)

Its not so easy to keep on top of em when the bike is used every day, but it would be a damn sight easier if they had had a finish applied to em.

Phil, noticed at the bottom of your post it says 95 1100gs. Guys with more GS experience than me should be able to answer this one but, I think there was one or two years when the rims were serious crap. Nearly all of them went mankey if the owners didnt keep them polished regularly. Once they had gone naff, that was it. Mankey for life. :(

Panzer Patrol,

I think you're right. My bikes eight years old and I am not expecting miracles, but the rest of the bike is in superb condition (unlike its rider)

I am hoping to to have em stripped and polished if I can find somebody to do it.

Strip and polish???

If you're going down that route you would be better off to get the rims hard anodized, a la Adv. I use mine year round and through the winter coat them in GP products protect and ride and then clean them up for the summer and they look like new. That's the best way of sorting out rim woes IMHO.

Hagon's in London can do all the work for you - if you want.

heres a reply from my email to them --

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. We can rebuild your BMW tubeless wheels for £60 each if you supply all parts or £120 each if we supply stainless spokes & nipples. Prices include vat. Turn round is 8 working days at this time.
Regards

this doesn't include rim polishing or anodising
st st spoke kits are available from sherlocks or motorberks

Yep I have also tried about every freakin alloy polishing rim cleaning product I could get my hands on. The best results so far was sitting with a small die grinder fitted with a polishing burr. This takes up to 2-3 hours of hard work and then you will only be semi pleased. Obviously the more time you put in the cleaner they get. Once clean you need to keep the bastards clean else it is back to square one.

At £60 a wheel cleaning and polishing they can do it!

Cheers

only the labour for re lacing the spokes that you supply them - otherwise its £120 !!

and you've still got to get the rims polished and or anodised - say £30 / pair

total min price -say- £150 plus £16 carriage ?

still worth it ??

Tools reqd
Partners toothbrush (firm bristles)
One tin of Brasso (liquid, not wadding)
Pressure washer

Spend at least an hour on each wheel, going round and round with your brassoey toothbrush untill your wheelrim is a muddy black consistency, Then do the other one.
leave till completely dry
Blast off with the pressure washer

This method gives them a lovely semi shiny finish. By not polishing them , they are left with a slight layer of something? which stops them corroding till the next time you have a spare couple of hours to dedicate to the art of wheelmanship.
Check on small area of rim before doing this. I believe some wheels are anodised.

Yes, I think it is still worth it than sitting there for hours on end polishing the hell out of these shite rims and then still no decent end result.
Unless you buy a hopefully shinier, cleaner set of rims(+- £200 odd) and use the old ones for offroad.

Thanks one and all for the contributions.
I am going down the anodised/stainless spokes route.

Now where do the kids keep that piggy bank ...........

The early gs wheels came in bare ally, no coating of any kind. They went manky after about 3 miles. My '94GS only used to get the wheels cleaned when I had a new tyre fitted, I just gave up in the end. A couple of weeks ago, I wrapped some newspaper around the discs, and sprayed them black, spokes and all. Now all I have to do is touch them up after I've had a new tyre fitted, easy. Doesn't look too bad either.
Has anyone had their rims done by hagon yet?
