When is bright too bright?

Any why was this fellow using them in the daylight :nenau

Because the simplest upgrade is to replace your main and dipped beam bulbs with HiD bulbs, no side mounted or crash bar mounted lights.

Therefore when the bike is on so is the headlight.

I can see that I need to adjust the light. What guidance can anyone give? I am guessing something like:-

from distance x the light should be focussed on a wall at height y, slightly to the left of centre... sort of thing.

And another guess the main beam should be focussed higher:nenau

I adjusted mine down so that you can just begin to see on the road ahead the upper edge of the beam. Any higher and there's no knowing what light you're shining in peoples' eyes and any lower and you're not getting the full benefit of the extra light.
I also look at the light I'm shining onto the rear of cars ahead. At normal following distance I'm looking to only illuminate them from their number plates down.

All this adjustment is all well and good, but it surely varies on...

How much fuel you have...
Pillion or not...
Panniers, the amount you are carrying...
Whether you are acclerating or braking..to a degree granted because of the Telever but none the less....:nenau

All said and done though... HID is the future really.

When we did the run to the Ace I couldn't help notice the guys behind that had them, the normal GS lights looked a pissy yellow thing in the distance.

The guys that had them looked nearer or certainly looked like they were travelling towards you at a greater pace- which is a good thing!

I must get me some soon, might just go for the spots at first...

A 400mile round trip yesterday so Les could "pimp" my 1200GSA with HID50s on the main, dip and both spots. To say my ride home to London was like watching Moses parting the Red Sea would be an understatement. They make an unbelievable difference and cars immediately pulled to the side on the motorway. (Or maybe its my Twat Suit that makes them scurry away)

The HIDs are the best modification to date.

Was just about to post and read the one above. Have just returned from Les having done over 200 miles on all sorts of roads. A vast improvement with slow moving traffic moving over to let me through. Did not get flashed once but I think Les adjusted mine before I left. Definitely the best mod for safety you can spend money on.

Well u r obviously not too bright....you wouldnt have bought a GS if yu were

As you cost me the price of a remus header, you should really spend your money on some HiD's so that we're even :D:D

I've got one of Les' 50W kits fitted to my dip beam. I adjusted it after fitting and have never had a single 'flash' from oncoming vehicles. Does provide a dramatic increase in lighting levels.

As Capt Said

As Captain Said
it depends on mrs g getting on the back
having the panniers fully loaded
and adjusting the suspention to rock hard when on full load inc passenger
tipping the light adjuster on the back of the lights

just accept
that the GS is a really high bike - so the lights are already high
many sports cars are low to the ground and their mirror becomes right at the same level as the lights so we are all bound to piss some people off

but now the best bit

a BMW dealers is now offering to fit these Hids to GSes as an optional extra / aftermarket thing so if you are ever pulled up by the old bill just say they are and were fitted by a BMW dealer

so if BMW are now fitting them they can hardly fail an MOT or be illegal :beerjug:

Very true, and I supply them :D

I had mine fitted by Cannon in Braintree - kit supplied to me by Les / Colebatch. Cannon not particularly happy as they had not supplied the kit and therefore could not inflate the price by a zillion percent. Top kit and almost certainly the best bling for your bucks!

very true.

i find i need to adjust them more often & and more carefully.

(50W dip and main)

oh yea

i should have said Les fitted all mine
2 x 50w & 2 x 35w
superb
reason i said BMW now fit them cos i had this funny vision of all of us telling the old bill "Les Wassel" fitted them
then all of a sudden police helicopters and van loads of armed police smashing through Les's door while he's on the loo and arresting him for causing civil unrest in the GS world

and even worse Sani telling them Les fitted them at 10 o'clock at night til 2 in the morning

the old bill would never ever beleive Sani

but we all know different eh :clap

MOST IMPORTANT

get a price from MBW for a laugh
then let a real tosser give you the bargain price of the year for supplying and fitting :beerjug:

There is this little issue of dispersion caused by lens/reflectors being used that are not designed for HID but that would be opening up a jar of worms...

lower them the cars in front don't need to adjust the mirror and people coming the other way don't flash

This may be a daft thought, but can you do a 35w hid on dipped and a 50w hid on main beam? After all if you are using main beam there should be no thers about to blind

Neil

That's what I've done, I've also masked off the top of the dip beam to stop the light direct from the burner (probably more than I need to, more experiments due). The adjuster is turned to set the beam lower than with the original halogen bulb, but the test is what car drivers in front of you do at night.
