OK finally took the plunge and ordered a 2610 off Maplins with their delightful £50 off voucher. Anyway, it's currently out of stock, so I guess they'll be ordering some from Garmin. Which means it may well come with V7 (well I can hope).

If this is the case, what is the advantage of registering it with Garmin now? As I understand it there is an unlock code with the package that I can use. So, could I, in theory, use my 2610, and then register it next year when V8 comes out and get a free update?

Or am I missing the point entirely, and will feel very foolish when it comes?

Mark - getting all excited and checking my mail too often to see if it's on its way!

You are correct. The only reason to register it before then would be if you had a warranty issue that would involve Garmin.

Not sure what would Garmin would do if you registered after a year, claimed your free upgrade and then needed a repair on the unit.

You have to go online to get the unlock code and, as I recall, simultaneously enter the serial number of the gps. So the issue does not arise. You are also authorised to unlock with one additional gps in the online mode.

Being smart enough to sort this business out Garmin did not leave too many doors for cheats to exploit.

Hi Mark,
So how did you get the £50 off  I cannae see that on the site:beerjug:

No - the code is supplied with the unit and you don't need to go on line at all. This was the case with my SP III (3yrs ago) and my Nav II (1yr ago).

You do have to go on line and register to get a second unit unlock code, however.

If you goto the 2610 page : http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37384&TabID=1&source=1&doy=14m4

then click the "Sign up and Save" button. then when you log in you have the option to "view your vouchers" (or something like that) and when you are purchasing there is also a drop down list of vouchers - just select the appropriate one.

Oh and this is my 2nd proper day with my GPS and I love it!

Mark

Thanks Mark ;) Will have a look, Im going for the same unit as you :beerjug:

That was not the case with my 276C Navkit this week, but no doubt the 2610 is different. But I bet it stores date of unlock in the unit.
