I've got an autocom and a little panel thingy that carries the headset socket, a 3.5mm jack for my ipod and (now) a bmw power socket. I have a bmw cable which plugs into the back of the socket, but the question is where do i get the power from.
The bmw cable is the same both ends, so I presume that somewhere on the bike there is another socket I can plug into, but where?
I could cut the cable and splice into the existing socket cable on the fairing, but it seems a shame if there is an existing socket somewhere.
Its an '05 GSA 1150 btw

Guessing what you are saying is that you have a BM power lead for a GPS and where to get power for it? If it is then on the ones I've used, you can piggy back onto the accessory socket down by your left foot.

It was just that the extra scoket came with a specific cable and plug - I assumed there was somewhere specific to put it - maybe not.

If it's the additional socket kit from BM, then you could put it near the beak like on the Adventurer or make a bracket and bolt it somewhere usefull, or just have it floating around (as I used to) under the seat and near to the battery.

i've got somewhere to put it, but was looking for somewhere to plug it into.

if all sockets used up , buy a marine type BMW socket n fit it wer ye want..
i put my side mounted power outlet under my side panel. then wired it to my aux fuse box on me 1100:D

A picture, or better discription of the plug will cut out all the guesswork thats going on. :augie

Crappy pictures attached

The cable has this plug on each end. one plug goes nicely into the power socket. Question is, is there somewhere on the loom to plug the other end?

A picture speaks a thousand words

It should 'piggy back' off the power socket thats down by your left ankle.

Take the panel off , its only held on by one bolt and look at the connections behind the existing socket. Its fairly straight forward.:thumb2

edit: its just what John A said in his first post.

So I just cut one end of my cable and splice into the cable running to the power socket next to the alternator? There isn't a socket to plug into, and in any case the cable isn't long enough to reach down there from the bars.

I dont think you have the cable that I thought you had

OK ............I fitted the BMW extra socket kit about 5 yrs ago. I have just taken my alternator cover off and had a look for you . It appears that the lead does not piggy back off the existing wiring its actually the opposite.

The BMW kit I bought has the same male end as yours but 3 inches from that it also has a female socket on it the same as that connection if you you see what I mean .......then obviously at the other far end of the cable it plugs into the DIN/marine type female socket in which to plug your accessory.

To fit my cable you unplug the existing male connector from the back of the alternator cover , you then plug that into the female connection of the new BMW cable kit ( which then gives it power) and you plug the male connector on that end of the cable kit back into the alternator cover (thus returning power to the existing socket).

If you have the same kit this should make sense ALSO if you have the same kit the cable may not appear to be long enough ( I didnt think mine was going to be at the time ) but once routed under the tank it was fine.

IF you have a different cable kit then I am sorry but what I have wriiten is probably about as much use as a chocolate teapot. However, I can have a look again and get you the part no for my cable kit if you require :thumb2

PS Me hands are dirty now :(

Hey, thanks for helping out
I just had the 'Ahhhh' moment. Seems the part I have is not the part it should be. Probably a result of my inadequate technical French when I was ordering it.
The cable I have has a male at each end, but no female.:blast
I think I'll just splice it into the existing cable for the socket on the fairing.

Sorry about your grubby mitts BTW - make sure you wash them before tea :)
