officially THE best place to live . . . . Wokingha
Being manly macho men, able to easily pick up a GS, many of us are 'above average' size / shape / height / weight.

So where do we buy our suits?

For me, when an M&S suits fits me across the shoulders (46 - 48) it's almost a double breasted wrap around my middle (38 - 40 waist). Trousers are OK (32 IL), but the jackets hang like a theatre curtain.

Any advice chaps?

Cheers,

Neil.

Don't wear one! Saves the trouble of buying.

I've never had or worn one.

Know what you mean, got really fed up with the lack of choice from the high street brands - was lucky to see two suits in my size. And the "Tall and Mighty" type stuff looks awful.

I suggest trying your nearest "gentlemens outfitter". Mine have a large suit selection, and will do a very good job of altering an off the peg suit so it fits very nicely indeed. It does cost about 50% more than the high street, but they do fit and look good. And the cloth is good quality too.

Cheers,

Mike

Ahhh , suits.

You have to find a manufacture who makes them in your particular shape and size. Ted Baker suits fit me perfectly, tried lots of other males and some fit in some places, but not in others.

Try having a suit hand made from a tailor, not as expensive as you might think, and you'll feel like Steve McQueen when you wear it .

one can picture the scene - a dodgy used car lot, a spiv in a shiny suit, rings a-sparkle on every finger, sheepskin coat with pork pie hat, an oily alsatian, a portakabin office, "sold as seen" pre-printed on every sales invoice................

Hugo Boss used to(and may still ) do a stocky size, also Gant do bigger sizes, mostly jacket and trousers rather that suits, but don't go too mad at Gant unless you want that middle class american look. :ymca

If you wear suits all the time its worth a fortnights holiday in Bankok, or Hong Kong or similar, stock up on hand made suits and shirts, you'll save a fortune, almost a free holiday, just have in mind a style and material you like, even take your favorite suit for them to copy, with photo's etc. they can copy anything given a reasonable amount of time.

Shep :bounce1

If you like the M&S suit buy it and take it to an alterations tailor. A tailored fit for about £30 more than the off the peg price. They could even extend the inside pocket for those Montecristo's you are partial too :thumb

Suits You Sir!

Neil you need to look up Slater's Menswear. I think the nearest branches to you are Basingstoke and Crawley. Try www.slatermenswear.com

They do a huge range of suits in an enormouse range of sizes and styles. They have a Gold Room for designer stuff and a range of everyday suits as well.

They have the best customer service I have ever received in the U.K. and they do all the alterations for free, on site. They can even do them on the day if you are really in a hurry. :)

Made to measure is the only way to get a suit that has a chance of fitting my ample gut for me.

I don't tend to wear a suit these days, but would try and find an 'old fashioned' bespoke tailors, but not in that Lundun unless I wished to pay silly money.

Echo that, I used to use the Glasgow & Edinburgh Slaters but now they have one in Dundee :thumb far by the best place to get a suit. Range from £80 to £500, talent in the stores is usually quite tasty also :D ;)

You talking about Steptoe here?

Austin Reed for me...

Austin Reed do great range from clasical cut to modern plus carry your Ted Bakers etc. Do alterations and not bad price for quality suit just remember to buy two pairs of trousers, nothing more irritating than having a tailored suit jacket with no matching pants!

Standard suit is a 6'' drop. This means waist is 6in less than chest. I have a 46 chest but a 34 waist with 34 inside leg. Buy a standard suit and I get 40 inch trousers, and a jacket that bags around the middle. Hugo Boss used to be Ok because they did an athletic fit which was a 10'' drop. Marks and Spencers actually do or used to do a mix and match range which allowed you to buy a jacket and then pick trousers that fitted. Always found that trousers wear out first so it was a good idea to buy two pairs of pants. Now stick to £3 jeans from Asda and t shirts. :D

You know you are getting a good suit when you shop in there and as mentioned previously the alteration service is very good. If you wait just a wee while the sales will be on again. I've just bought a really nice black suit from there at 1/2 price. :thumb

Don't forget the most important part of any suit is the pair of shoes the wearer has on. Nothing worse than a top notch suit with Lidl Brogues...

Also as mentioned Slaters. The Glasgow branch is worth it just to see the female assistants who are on commissioon and ress to make the sale if you know what I mean... ;)

I know the problem.I have a 48" chest and a 38" waist and have had problems buying suits all my life.Unfortunately as a sales rep I have to wear suits all the time for work which is a pain. My last 3 came from Moss Bros, their 'de haviland' brand seems to pretty much fit quite well. The jackets will be a bit large round the middle but not as much as others.Their sizes tend to be generous as well.Worth a look. :thumb
