Where to fill up BEFORE catching the Chunnel TO France

For which you have to pass the exit slip road for the Chunell, then come off at the next junction, faff about through town traffic, only to then go back on yourself, via the countless junctions.

Looks like this

and also making oneself travel further, thus taking longer too. Examples are set from the middle of the QE2 Bridge over the Thames.

versus effortless peeling off the M20 at Ashford and rejoining it, a short distance later, following by a regular utilisation of the Le Shuttle approach slip road.

I know which option I would take any day. But hey we are all so different, so whatever works for the folks.
If anyone wants any advice about petrol stations in Hertfordshire, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm only 100-odd miles away, and I've been to or through Herts many times.

I've only used Le Shuttle several hundred times, though...

Old Harlow and Harlow, compare and contrast, please. Use both sides of the paper.

For fuck’s sake. It’ll make a/out a quid difference. If that affects your tour abroad then just give it up.

It is rather akin to bods swearing that supermarket fuel is crap, but overjoyed to see it when they cross the Channel.

Surely the only reason to fill up before leaving is so you can push on without first looking for fuel?
What's the drama?

There a fuel station on the departure road on the French side. No drama.

this is why I fill up at Tesco. I'm close to empty by the time I get to the tunnel so it makes sense to complete all of the admin in the UK so there is no need to stop for customs or fuel on entering France. Just ride until the bladder demands a stop or most likely, I get to the first hotel as it would be a late afternoon train.

With the new road layout on the M20, coming off at J10, refuel at Tesco with pay at pump and rejoin at the new 10A is just convenient.

I totally agree with you Wessie.

This was exactly the reason why in 2024 when the two in our group came from Glouchestershire, couple from East Midlands/Derbyshire, my self a 100 miles away (thats nearly half of my fuel tank capacity gone) and Arsey came from Portsmouth.
We all had agreed to rendezvous at the Chunnel, with everyone refuelling at same Tesco PFS for convenience*, just to make sure that none of us have gotten off the train and suddenly everyone had different range in fuel capacity present in their tanks, with a need to que up with many "likeminded" cagers and tossers (whilst others sat feeling like they are waisting time), whom were running late for their train crossing, thus hadn't bothered to fill up before they had reached the Chunnel.

Nothing to do with cost, savings, etc. Just convenience and a bit of forward planing. I personally, do not want to be wasting 35 minutes on the train twiddling my thumbs, then having put my helmet and gloves* on to take said items off again only mere 2-3 minutes later. Hey each to their own though, feel free to do what ever they want and however they want to. Free country and all that.

*It was so convenient and easy, that it made a perfect sense to start this thread. I have since been asked by fiends to remind them where it was, so that they could let their friends, or family know.

**It is agains the law to ride a motorcycle in France without the gloves on. Bod at Sids this year got done for doing just that. a €45 on the spot fine. Thats 1.5 tank worth of fuel in my KTM or best part of 6-7 pints of juice lost.

Certainly, filling up with a group, when everyone fills up at the same time is beneficial. It by and large prevents the: “Mate, me light’s just come on” panic, 15 minutes after the last fuel stop.

Everyone starting the day with a full tank, preferably filled the evening before, usually speeds progress, too.

Where to fill up? That’s up to them, it’s a big world of Adventure (with a capital A) out there.

PS From running the Wanders, it’s surprising how many bods have no realistic idea of the range of their bike. One bod told me: “I never put more than £15 in, as fuel is expensive”. I kid you not.

Crack on, fill your boots.
Couldn't afford to fill one boot there!

Tactically placed, and priced, to cater for 'le Rosbifs' who didn't refuel in Blighty, and go into meltdown the first time they see fuel prices in Euros!

Can’t say I even noticed the fuel price there. If the cost of fuel is that important then perhaps touring by motorcycle is not for you.

I filled up in Hythe, its only five minutes up Blackhouse Hill to the Terminal.
Overnighting in Hythe for that reason.

I used to use the Stade Court Hotel a few years ago but it is a bit shit now, apparently.
