I can recommend tesco in Portsmouth*. It worked well for me coming down from North London area, via the M25/A3(M)/A27 and coming of at Eastern Road A2030, then heading a mere 7 minutes to the port from there.

The advantage being, that if you have a highly tuned machine, Tesco RON99 Momentum fuel is probably better than RON98 from elsewhere. You also do get to collect a minuscule amount of Clubcard points in the process.

Why do I bother you might ask?

Well, I roll of the boat, knowing that I have worry free 250 miles (KTM 1290 or indeed a standard 1200/1250 GS, have similar consumption as does 2002 VFR 800) ahead of me, rather than do what most folk do, get off the boat and dive into the first forecourt (with inflated prices) to fill up. I can also use my UK banking or credit card, without incurring any charges or taking €40+ euros out of my abroad spending kitty. The fuel in the UK is also considerably cheaper V France, where it is not unusual to see €1.98+ per/L

*other options available, such as Asda or Shell next to the port.

For those coming along the M27 from Southampton, there as a big Tesco in Port Solent. I usually fill up here.

Gourmands will notice McDonalds next door.

There is a Shell garage very close to the port but you have to drive towards the city centre and double back from the roundabout after going over the fly over, although you would not enter the ULEZ by doing so, should you be in a truck or big Gin Palace.

There is also a Sainsbury’s with Petrol in Fitzherbert Road, Farlington just a few hundred metres off the A27 as it passes the “Eastern Road” access into Portsmouth before merging into the M27 and M275, ideal if coming down the A3 route to join the ferry. Postcode is PO6 1RR.

It’s location is shown in EVskij’s map in post #1, just above Farlington marshes.

You have become Wapping v2.0

If coming from the Southampton or M3 direction, it would be quicker to hop off at Fareham Central M27 J11, then pop down to the Sainsbury’s at Wallington for fuel (PO16 8SU) via A27 onto Wallington Way, then easily retrace your steps straight back to M27 J11 and then straight into Portsmouth via M275. (Don’t ride straight towards Fareham from J11 on A27, keep in the left lane as you head towards it and drop down beneath the Delme flyover and then around the roundabout beneath and onto Wallington way).

Living close to Portsmouth, I tend to depart with a full tank.
If using LeTunnel (my preferred choice) I fill up at Ashford Tesco just before reaching the departure terminal.

Either way, it’s bloody annoying not to mention highly inconvenient when one prat in your group gets off the cross-channel transport (or Santander) and starts flapping about having no fuel (no names mentioned)…..Pillock.

Look on Google maps and it'll show the nearest ones and the price.
My Zumo XT does the same and it's an excellent feature when touring as you can ride straight to the cheapest one.

There is no competition from me, let’s clear that up.

I am just being helpful seeing as it works for me, so I see no reason why it wouldn’t work for someone else.

You’re just making it even more true .

What price is it in the UK now? I paid £1.43 for 98 yesterday in Limoges....obv in euros but the price seems about the same around here (off the autoroute)

It isn’t as much about cost of fuel (although this does play a small part) more of a convenience stretching your Euros, without wasting them unnecessarily.

I always use the Shell on the A2030, it's really close to the A27 at Farlington (just to the north). I come down the A3 a relatively short distance, so I could realistically just fill up at home, but it's a convenient meeting point as well and less than 10 mins to the port on the motorway. Probably not as cheap as the supermarkets, but against the hassle of negotiating city traffic and the overall cost of the holiday, it's of no real consequence.

Around here it's roughly £1.35 a gallon for 4 star basic fuel. In France last week I don't think I saw the same fuel for less than 1.80 Euros a litre and, as you might expect, on the motorways it was well over 2 Euros a litre.

adventure / touring bikes are already heavy on wet / slippery decks

not worth adding to weight

You might take a different view if you were going from Harwich to the Hook of Holland because the difference between filling up at Morrisons in Harwich and a motorway service area in the NL is about £0.80 per litre.

bang on! NL is one of the most expensive in Europe so this is good advice......currently around EURO 1.95 - 2.10 per litre...motorways are around EURO 2.30 per litre!
