Where to fill up BEFORE catching the Ferry out of Portsmouth TO France/Spain

bang on! NL is one of the most expensive in Europe so this is good advice......currently around EURO 1.95 - 2.10 per litre...motorways are around EURO 2.30 per litre!

It’s an act of insanity to cross over then fill up in a motorway services close to the port.

We’re on the evening crossing back to the UK tonight and we filled up in Harwich on our way out then drove to Gedinne and back to here on cheap UK fuel. We’ll top the tank up when we land tomorrow then no need to stop and pay UK motorway prices which are spiteful to say the least.

Likewise when wife and I rode to Cochem in May, Filled up at home (Costco perks) with cheap fuel, then topped the tank at Morrisons (Harwoch) which is literally yards way from port entry, meaning I did not have to even think about refilling before we reached Germany.

It is a financial suicide refilling in NL. Thank you to Grant for warning me in advance. The cheapest fuel there is in Europe is in Luxembourg. That’s is where one does want to refuel, before heading home, topping off fuel tank along the way, with just enough fuel to reach UK PFS is my strategy.

Speaking of Morrisons, if travelling to Portsmouth down the A3 the Morrisons store at Horndean just off A3 and about five miles north of Portsmouth has a filling station. Its very easy to jump off/back on the A3 there rather than the faff of navigating unfamiliar city streets.

You might take a different view if you were going from Harwich to the Hook of Holland because the difference between filling up at Morrisons in Harwich and a motorway service area in the NL is about £0.80 per litre.
Fair point

i was referring to OP's thread title - specified France / Spain

Don’t worry, I was just throwing in a bit of advice for those using the crossings to the NL but even France and Spain give you a slap in the face financially if you’ve got a big tank and fill up on a motorway soon after landing.

Spanish fuel is cheaper than French by some €0.15-€0.20 per L. But even then, I rather have a full tank from the off and not be queuing up with the rest of them at the first PFS I come across. It takes hardly any effort to plan your fuel stop before boarding the ship. Just one less beer on the gut aboard.

Full tank of fuel on board the ship/train has never bothered me in the slightest.

I am amazed at how many bikermate head to the supermarkets for fuel, as this forum has been screaming that it’ll rot your engine in seconds.
Near 25k miles in, and mine is about to shit itself.

that's the Sir John Baker in North End on a Friday night
It used to be “The Mighty Fine” on Commercial Road. What a pub ! (AKA The Albany).

Stolen from a thread on a cycling forum, although I remember the place well myself, including “Big Sylv” and “Joey”.

“The Mighty Fine in Portsmouth was an interesting pub back in the 80s. They had a one-armed barmaid and a club-footed dwarf bouncer. The dwarf would sit on the barmaid's shoulders at closing time or during a ruckus and swing half a pool cue around his head to clear the crowds. At other times he would go around stamping on the toes of anyone misbehaving with his club foot. The landlord was a transvestite who would loudly proclaim his ability to "F*** or fight" anyone in the pub. All the furniture was bolted to the floor. Had some great nights there.”

good advice from one who knows - another of your threads reads

quote
" Back in June on our trip to Austria (some 10 weeks ago), I’ve dropped my bike on rather steep hill, whilst doing a U-turn "
Well done that Sherlock!

Even after riding for 10-20-30-40+… years, you still have to practice, and no matter how good a rider you might think you are, chances are you will drop your bike.

In my instance it was a bit different scenario to RORO ferry (the bod was referring to) and a steep hill on a blisteringly hot day where my incident has happened. But at least I am happy to admit without being forced to at gun point, that I have dropped my bike but not only that, I’ve dropped it on my foot, resulting in two broken bones in my foot.

Over to you now.
