Where to get a spring clip?

No, not a haircut.

I was replacing the main light bulb and the pesky clip dropped out.

Not a problem thought I, but wait... After emptying and sweeping the whole bloody garage (and checking the bike), the damn thing's disappeared and it's not a part I can buy.

Anyone help?

A company that supplies fixings. I don't know what this part looks like, but it could be a standard clip available.

Give a local bike breaker a ring

Look on the wishbone of the bike. Not just a quick glance.

Most things that drop down end up on there.

I went to e-bay, looked up the bidders on new headlamps and e-mailed them asking if I could buy the clip from their broken old headlamp. A kindly gent sent me his free of charge as he was skipping the old unit.

BMW will only sell the headlamp unit - no surprise there, I've had no luck with the breakers and it definately wasn't on the bike. Thanks for the Ebay tip LL, looks like that or trying to fashion one out of a paperclip.

put a washer on the screw to hold the s/clip in place

I know this is sorted out now BUT................................

This kind of problem can be sorted out with a piece if piano wire or welding rod(Tig or gas).

I have used this solution on a number of occasions

I still have my back-up solution fitted behind the bulb connection - a large wodge of green foam, its held in place by the round cover and pushes the bulb into place. Ideal to have in place if a clip dissapears by the side of the road. I'd recommend fitting it now even if both clips are in place
