where to go to learn how to drive off road?

Hi everybody,

I have a 1200Gs and would like to learn how to use it on dirty roads. :cool:
I have no experience at all and I noticed that the BMW course in Wales is fully booked till God knows when.... :confused:

I met a guy the other day that told me you do sometimes organize days in offroad where you accept beginners... :bow :bow
Is it right?

When will it be the next one? :rolleyes:

Would I need to fit wobbly tires to my bike? In this case how worse are they on normal dry tarmac?

Sorry for all the questions but it's the only way to learn..

Although it's quite a distance for you to travel from London!

I would recommend knobbly tyres rather than "wobbly tires" :D

Most people like the Continental TKC80 which are pretty good on dry tarmac, although obviously not as good as a road tyre. But they are certainly the best compromise for a bike that's used on all terrains.

If you are happy to "learn by experience" there are a good variety of Byways in Berkshire that I could show you round.
If it is dry then Tourances or similar should be fine to start with, in fact they are better for beginners on dry rutted tracks than TCK80s IMO.

Generally, dry rutted tracks (at least around Berkshire/Wiltshire) have a "firm base" with not much in the way of gravel/stones/mud so Tourances grip ok. When you nudge the edge of a rut with the front TKC it has a tendancy to try and climb out of the rut, more so than Tourances, which I think can be disconcerting to a beginner.

Sure - it's just as easy to demonstrate how to pick the bike up to 2 people ;)
 
Honestly I'd rather learn how not to drop it (or at least not too often) but I think that at the beginning itwill happen pretty often........ :mmmm
 
Where to go to learn how to drive off road?

I learnt here :D. Lots of tips from seasoned riders put me right after many spills :eek: (stopped counting after 10). Good motocross boots are as important as a helmet. I know, because I didn't have any! :rolleyes:

I'm still crap though.

The approach I took was:

1) ride and fall off a lot. Decide I enjoyed riding, not falling off. (Beware, progressing to next stages is ExPENSIVE.)
2) book a place on BMW off-road course. It's the best I've experienced.
3) ride some more, do some competitions, be utterly amazed at how much better other riders can be.
4) develop some bad habits.
5) book a place on the Geraint Jones school Look here
6) ride lots more
7) start again at 3)

Is there any map where to see where green lanes are? As I said I'm Italian and I don't know your countryside too well.
I could definitely try to go alone and learn by mistake but I don't know where to go.

Same here, if there is a trip orgainsed I'd love to come along. Done a Wombat Hunt and thoroughly enjoyed it. Love some more.
