So if you ran it in as per the instructions, at what mileage will the consumption of oil stop or at least become negligable?

It probably won't, it's all about seating piston rings and getting the best seal possible.

I'm with Fanum on this one (and I know running in is a very contentious issue) - I ran in my 06 12GSA the proper way (i.e. not how the manual says) and it hasn't used a drop of oil in 4000 miles, and when I took it into the dealer for the first service they asked me "What octane rated fuel you got in that 'cause it goes bl00dy well!", to which I replied, "standard grade cheap as chips Tesco stuff."

Mine used oil (abt 200 - 500 a pint) until 12000 miles came up - now it uses none even if you thrash it. I ran it in ultra carefully

You'll find that most engines will 'burn' more oil if you're using engine breaking.... Something to do with the pressures in the engine.

My previous 1150 had 36.000 on it when I sold it and it was still using oil.

Still wasn't run in

Just done 1600 miles around Ireland on a 12000 mile ADV and it used about 500ml.

on mine (1150gs 2001) if i cane from cold it uses oil if i allow it to warm up through gentle throttle use no oil is used in lots of years of plastic jap rockets they never used oil but they also had no soul

Interesting, I do, maybe that explains it - more oil consumption, less wear on pads and discs though, which has got to be better.

My 1100 completed it's run in period about three days ago, uses about half a pint of oil every 3k.

In 3350 miles of 'Round the Bend' I used 200ml of oil

In 90 mins of track time I used 600ml

Bike has done 15000 miles and I didn't run it in, someone else did!

Mine is the same. On my daily commute (don't really get above 60) it doesn't burn much, but when I was ragging it 2 up lots of 90mph motorway miles and alpine passes it drank a fair bit more oil.

They love to be caned Just keep a spare litre in the top box (Yes, I'm old before my time!). 33 years old and a confirmed topbox fan.

Ran mine in the proper way Was fairly careful for the first 80 to 100 miles then just let rip. The result; 11 months old, 16,000 miles so far and used next to nowt.
