wheres all my icons gone

Hi all wee problem with daughters pc windows xp
it seems to boot up ok nowt unusual untill the last couple of seconds just when about to use it then all the icons, task bar everything except the desktop pic disapears. I was thinking along the lines of rolling it back to a previous save but if there is nothing to click on not sure if its any help but if i press ctrl, alt, dell, task manager does still work

Start it in 'safe mode' and then do a restore. (reboot and tap F8 a couple times when it is going through the first couple of boot screens)

Hi thanks for the advice Did this but unfortunately it only offered one restore point which was today's date, tried to change this to last week but no go, did the restore anyway but still no joy still looking at a screen of tulips
early start the morn so will leave it for now cheers

Sounds like a problem with explorer. Try the ctrl-alt-del bit from your desptop and select 'New Task' from the applications tab. Type in 'explorer.exe' without the apostrophies and see if it starts. If you get it all back just try a shutdown and all might be ok. Otherwise, you might try repairing Internet Explorer from add remove programs as it is one and the same with windows explorer.

Thanks for the help lads, problem did in fact seem to be down to explorer, tried removing and reinstalling, but it was a non starter couldn't keep the screen active for more than a few seconds before it locked up. Took the plunge and did a system recovery and all seems fine again
