I have an 1150 with HID fitted to the dipped beam; switched on fine this morning, but got to work to find I have no dipped beam and main beam only comes on when I use the flash. I cant here the high pitched whine of the transformer either. Any ideas? I'm hoping its a fuse. Its a long way home in the dark and all I've got is the pilot light at the moment!

Sounds like the R/H switch gear/lighting switch is messing around.

R/H? If it's like mine with dip always on it may be the Dip/Head switch on the left.

David, I'd look at running a fused live straight from the battery to the transfomer to get you home. You may already have an add-on feed to something else that you can temporarily divert, otherwise Halfords or a car accessory shop will have all you need. It doesn't need to be pretty.

Also I think that there is a thread on here somewhere about buying the replacement innards for the switch assembly instead of the entire BMW "needs mortgage" item.

Edit: You could swap the lamp feed so that the flasher works the dip beam and then tape it up to stay on. Should get you home.

There have been a couple of occasions when I've started my bike with the lights already turned on & the HID hasn't relit after the load shedding relay cuts in. Not a big issue as, like any IT helpdesk I've ever called, I just use the switch on the R/H switchgear to turn it off & power it back up again. Works every time... but I'd be stuck if I had a newer one with no off switch.
