Just got back from 2100 miles down to Italy and back on my '06 gs (my '04 barely made it out of my road without breaking down!)with the missus on the back, bike ran perfectly, never missed a beat, only used 1/4 of the windows worth of oil, luggage didn't fall off, in fact as far as the bike was concerned, totally drama free. Brilliant!
Except....
On the way back we were sitting in a bar discussing this marvel of German engineering when the subject of 'grin factor' arose, or rather the lack of it!
We have made many longish trips on a variety of bikes, Aprilias, Triumphs, Harleys and every single one of them has had us grinning from ear to ear by the first petrol stop..... If we go out on my HD softail we start laughing before the end of the road! (might just be the loud pipes though)
Its just not there on the Beemer, I'd noticed this before but I thought it was me being odd, but no, from the crows nest behind me she noticed the same lacking.
Result? It has to go, its brilliant but theres no grin factor. Have I missed something? In thirty years of riding I can't remember the last bike I rode that lacked it (it was probably Japanese though) and that even includes Enfield Bullets in India!
How sad, a brilliant capable bike but....It doesn't make me grin...therefore it doesn't fulfill its primary role in (my) life!
So if you want a fully specced '06 GS............

Of course it's a load of tosh. He's already owned a GS12 for a year before buying another one and discovering it doesnt make him or his wife grin. :mmmm

He seems

IMO It's simple, if you dont enjoy the bike flog it and buy something else.

Exactly what he did.

Just dont expect to get much sympathy in a GS forum when you spit your dummy out over GS ownership

He didn't. He merely said it didn't have the grin factor for him. Seems a fair comment to me - each to their own.

Can't see what he said that merited having a go at him. :nenau

That was for the OP's benefit. The OP has not bought a new bike, unless you consider his buying another GS12 as being a new bike.

Whos having a go? :nenau

it all depends on what makes you grin. i also got a prilla factory rsv and for the road there is no contest, the GS is the more fun bike for most types of riding. if one bike had to go it would be the aprilia, which i still love. on fast or slow twisty roads i find the GS12 great fun, why?, because you can attack the bends with confidence, the bike is stable, grips well, has grunt where you need it and great brakes. oh and if it goes a bit wrong it doesnt punish you.

If this sort of riding doesnt appeal then i can see that there may be some faults that reduce the overall pleaseure. If you are a bends man then check you have the suspension set up to suit before you wave goodbye.

SO WHY ARE YOU READING IT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :whip

its raining outside, the bikes just been cleaned and there aint nothin better to do than BITCH! :natter

I've been riding bikes for getting on for 30 years, from C90's to LCs to XS11s to old British Iron to Supermotos and every single one of them has put a grin on my face, probably summit to do with the fact that they all have one thing in common; two wheels - actually thinking about it that's not strictly true as some have had sidecars bolted to them, still put a grin on my face though :thumb

Just been as sick as a dog and in bed for two days unable to move. This morning I felt vaguely human and, despite it pissing down up here in Nottingham, went out for a ride on my GS - now sat here with a big big grin - the GS never fails to do that to me :D :D :D

Why doesn't the bike make you grin Minky - not sure you make that very clear in your post

Andres

Since I sold mine earlier this year my smile quota has dropped below healthy....despite some teething probs it gave me more fun than any other bike I've owned...must put some pennies aside and work harder on SWMBO ;)

Hardly a cause for the abusive language.....

OI! Minky your talking BULLSHIT :goof

If the bikes so SHITE then why did you buy a second r12oogs ? :jes

but so eloquent....
The new one cost me £500 plus the lemon! For once, a dealer with a conscience, so who wouldn't give it a second chance? It IS a brilliant bike, my original comment was that both me and the missus noticed a lack of the grin factor, that was all....

How can a brilliant bike (1st one being a lemon ) not have Grin Factor-I would like to see a poll of Brilliant Bikes without Grin Factor short list im sure

Surely a bike without Grin Factor would add up to a crap bike :illbe

True, true... rode a VFR VTec for a couple of weeks as a hire bike after a right-off. Went fast , handled okay - but was shite no grin factor ... okay it was also shite on tight twisties as the linked brakes were a pain , and you enede up on the tank to get the centre of gravity right.

The Vtec thing just seems to be a marketing doddad , thought my old 1200 Bandit had more punch than that when all the "power" was supposed to be there. A competent but boring bike... now a 1200 GS ... a brilliant and competent bike with gobs of torque on tap for riding the twisties... but no grin factor... can't have been riding it right :)

Different strokes for differnt folks... so sell it to someone who will enjoy it then :)

RIGHT :bash

Similary....

I took a vtec vfr hire bike from Vancouver to Whilstler a while back.

Good bike, not much of a grin factor. Would have preferred the GS - especially given the vanishing road
