Just picked up new brake pads for 2001 1150GS.
No abs, no servo.
Would the origional pads have had as big a chamfer as these replacements?
Is there any reason for this on both edges of the pad?
Less pad for my dosh I think.

Leading edge....

Many disc brake pads have a small chamfer at either edge of the pad, the one that faces the rear of the front caliper would be termed the 'leading edge' and its purpose is to aid the braking and bedding in process. However the pads you have do seem to have a rather excessive amount of the friction material removed in the chamfer area. Reduced friction area = reduced braking effect. Maybe you have been supplied with the wrong pads for your model.

The reduction in friction material would certainly reduce the brakes ability to squeeze the disc, unless this was a 'factory fix' to make the brakes less agressive as it were.

Now someone will say its all total bollocks and they are all like that, but they aren't on mine so there!

I am sure the originals were not like this.
Do you think that these may be for models with brake assist?
Servo assist would mean you would not notice less bite from the smaller pad area!!!!!!!

Mine Are Just The Same!!

Kenny, Iv'e got a set of genuine BMW pads in the garage for my 2001 non-abs GS and there exactly the same as yours mate!.
I think by the time most of us have a look at our original pads to check condition most of the chamfer will have worn off??. Not too worried about less pad for money 'cos my originals are still in at 34.000 miles with a fair bit to go - mind the BMW price is a bit steep, don't you think??

See you soon?, Cheers.......................Grizzly

thats how BMW sell them now-- how much did you pay, i could have sold you ferodo platinums for £12 a set---- look in the discount post-----

:D

££££££££££££££

Yes I know there are cheaper pads out there all with different pros and cons.
The origional pads are a known and tested item which I know work well and I am happy with.
They were £25 per disc for the front and £19 for the rear.
Just lucky I guess at wearing them all out at the same time.

With less surface area would more force be applied to the disc?
