Trollsrigen closed for the rest of the year…. REOPENS - Expected opening date for Trollstigen is set to July 14, 2025

That’s a bugger, it was going to be one of the highlights on my way to NordKapp. Still, not going to let it spoil what should be a great trip. Off tomorrow morning to catch the Newcastle - Ijmuiden ferry.
There is so much stunning scenery in Norway it won’t mater much.
Have a great trip. Hopefully the weather is kind to you too.

Trollstigen and Atlantarhavsvegen are the places lots of people are talking about.

However, I you feel like slowing down and actually see something rather than merely checking the boxes on the bucket list, I would like to chime in with a couple of suggestions.

If you are aiming for the Atlanterhavs vegen, which you pass in 15 min, on the way to it (proceeding northbound) you pass the city of Molde.
If the weather is decent, there is a great place to have lunch with a view.

Here is a general view of the area.

The Trollstigen road is Blue (and closed beyond the visitor center on the top) and Atlanterhavsvegen is Pink.

The Molde view point with a modest restaurant is the #1 point.

And this is the view of the city of Molde:

The road that leads up to it is gravel for the last 5 min, but in good condition and may easily driven on road tyres.

The #2 point is an old Fishing village, well worth visiting if time permits. To get to it you need to travel with two ferries. The ferries are of decent size and runs often enough to where you don't worry about the timetable..

A couple of shots from Veiholmen...

Thanks for the information Knutk. A few of us are planning on heading up that way from Geiranger today, just hoping the current low cloud clears.

just got back from Norway. we rode up to the top of the trollstigen walked around the view point at took photos. then rode down to the bottom and took photos up and of the waterfall. then we walked up half way. there was a few cyclists riding up it. barriers across the road. they said it will be shut all season and maybe next year

Thanks for the heads-up. Had heard the road was closed but that the viewpoint was still accessible if approaching from the south. @knutk - thanks for the tip - looks like a lovely spot for lunch away from the hustle and bustle.

Reading the local newspapers, there are reports of tourists disregarding the barriers and walk/cycle/ride on the road anyway.

I don't intende to be a police wannabe, but the road is closed for a reason, and even though the road has a history of rockslides (looking at the senery we can clearly see where the road has been rebuilt to a different path several times in order to avoid dangerous sections), the slides frequency seems to have increased over the later years..

This is a clip from a couple of years ago...

You'll always get the fools who think they know best. Hopefully the Darwin principle takes care of them. I plan to photo the pass from a safe distance.

If you buy a toaster it is followed by five pages with warnings, printed in several languages and warns against anything from taking a bath with your toaster to keep you from heating your fingers.

Warnings have become so common that to many people, rather than using their brain, they think that as long as there is no warning sign, it's 'all ok'. And, since the five pages in the toaster seems like an overkill, this also gives us a feeling that warnings are overrated, and may be ignored.

Well, mother nature takes no prisoners, and you can not cover every danger with a warning sign. So, every year tourist falls of clifs, they fall into rivers, are taken by avalanches or drowns from accidents with their rented boat getting caught in sudden changes in weather.

As for Trollstigen, it's surrounded by steep mountains, and this causes lot's of challenges.
This video tells a little bit about the way it's handled. But even if every caution is taken, accidents happens.
The visitor center was out of use for two years pending a rebuild after it was taken by an avalanche (in winter, so it was closed and noe one got hurt)

I'm not writing this to keep people from going there, I just urge visitors to respect warnings and safety information.
Trollstigen is the source of large income for the region, and closing it has a great economical impact, thus when they decide to close it, this is not something they do for fun.

Expexted opening date for Trollstigen is set to July 14, 2025.

The job to safeguard against rockslides is still in progress, and the date is an estimated date set based on how the work is progressing.

But safeguarding the nature is always a lottery, and there still may pop up unexpected challenges that may delay the opening date.

Anyway this is the date set as of now.
