Any recommendations on which GPS / mapping system to get for my HTC Desire Android phone?

I want a standalone one, ie Internet not needed. I've seen the copilot live 8 but it seems to get some very mixed reviews. Previously used Garmin mobile xt, but it and tomtom don't seem to do an Android version :(

Dunno about a standalone one, I've been using Google Navigation on my Desire and it seems to work very well.

I've heard the same about CoPilot on Android, used to use it on a Windows Mobile phone a few years ago but haven't had the need since then (I'm using Google Nav when an address defeats the 3 year old mapping on my Zumo :D).

Does that not need an internet / wifi connection for the maps? My perception was that it does, which is ok in the built up areas, but there'll be large amounts of the UK thta won't have cover, and if you go abroad and have to pay roaming charges

Latest version of Google Navigate can store routes etc... not great if you go too far off them but you can store up quite a load of them to get most of an area... So then you won't need internet.. just WiFi to get the maps when you do the route planning....

You don't need wifi for it, but I'm not 100% sure about internet connection. I think it just uses the GPS connection for actual navigation, but I'd have to switch off mobile networks and try it, and I haven't had the presence of mind to try that yet. :blast

NDrive 11 for 20 quid, all latest maps installed on phone so no internet needed

will also support cameras from pocket gps site as a "kml" file

very quick & slick

You do need internet for Google navigate as it uses Google maps when you put in your search or go off route. Useless if you get out of 3G or are abroad when it gets pricey. For in the city though oe well populated none roaming areas it does work good. I use Co-Pilot (also on a Desire) which in my opinion works great and is about £18 for uk version or £27 I think for Europe.

I should add that for the co-pilot live services to work you still need an internet connection but it will navigate perfectly without all the live stuff.

I use sygic, it uses tom tom maps downloaded to sd card. you can make your own routes and how they are calculated i.e. use minor roads only etc. They are also working on a web app that allows you to plan online and download your route to he phone, really looking forward to that. 19.99 euros approximately £17.50

I'm using CoPilot Live Premium UK + IRE version 9.1.0.214 on my Galaxy SII. It works brilliantly. Very responsive in that it 'follows' the road very well, especially on roundabouts. The maps seem pretty accurate, the speed limit indicator quite often changes when you pass the actual speed limit sign.

I don't know about other Apps but it is a high battery resource so really needs external power if you're using it for longer periods.

A couple of times it has frozen, but 'caught up' a few moments later. Didn't cause me any problems though.

It will support PocketGPS Cameras but that seems a bit awkward to add so I use their CamerAlert App instead.

Further to my post. I have just found out that the CamerAlert App can, as well as self start when placed in car cradle, start another app such as CoPilot.

They have yet to release that and it has now been some time. I found this though:
As mentioned by Ricardo just below, there is a workaround on this.
1) Create your route into googlemaps, or directly into specialised software, such as Tyre, or ITN Converter (http://www.benichou-software.com).
With ITN converter you can import GoogleMaps URL very quickly
2) export your route to .ITN (tomtom)
3) Convert your route from ITN to ITF with https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-s2...
4) Put the ITF file into your phone (AURA/RES/ITINERARY)
5) Enjoy ;) works fine for me (Android ICS 4.03, Nexus S)
