Ive been loooking on ebay at s/h Autocoms, which system can be powered from the bikes electrics. I know via the Autocom website that all but the "easy" csn be bike powered but most on ebay are older systems

I would go for one of the 7-pin systems if you can.
The Easy-7-Advance (bottom of range) and Pro-7-Sport (top of range) are expandable for bike power where as the (middle) Active-7 can only be bike-powered.
Most Pro-7's will have been bike powered and will probably come with the optional power lead.
Hope this helps.

Cheers gives me something to look out for :thumb2

If you are looking for a bike powered system keep your eyes peeled forthe Active-7 or Pro-7 or even some of our latest systems like our Active Plus or Super Pro AVi

The Easi-7 or Easi Plus are mainly sold as portable systems but can be bike powered with extra parts. Other differences are the Active or Pro series offer VOX against open mic on the Easi-7 or Easi Plus

Oh yeah John your reply looks a little confusing to me where it kind of reads that the Active-7 can not run bike to bike when it can.

Hi Richard,

The original poster made absolutely no mention of bike-to-bike, just of bike-powering! We have interpreted the question differently.
I apologise to the original poster if my reply was confusing

I've now got 2 autocom systems,

The first one is an active plus, which if memory serves right was about £150.00 max about the size of a packet of cigarettes.

I had to buy an extra lead and headset for pillion which came to about £30.00off ebay.

this system has 9v battery and 12v direct from the bike, which caused me no problems with power, installation was a piece of cake - 2 wires to battery, work out where you want your leads to go - make nice and tidy - use system. Really simple.

The VOX setting is in the battery compartment so on initial set up I did not install the unit under the seat until I got the VOX setting just right.

A year in all weathers and its as good as new. Never had one problem.

Fitted a MP3 player and tomtom ''dongle'' (although the tomtom thing is crap and really quiet) worked really well, no sound issues, bought phone connector but did not use it as its very distracting...

Mrs now learning to ride so she has inherited the unit, the positive of this is the 9v battery as her little 125 only has a 6v battery and no where to fit the unit.

Now got an Active 7 smart (active-rider) 12v direct from bike only, small size unit 3 leads - rider, pillion and bike to bike (grey walkie talkie lead) (which you need another lead for) phone and music sockets.
Got this off ebay for just over £80 so I don't know how much they are new.
Now using my phone (sony) as my MP3 player and it plugs directly into the unit with the supplied sony walkman leads - literally plug and play

Works bike to bike with crappy motorola walkie talkies we got just over 1/2 a mile through the centre of town

With regards to the speakers / mic there mega easy to fit - I've got an arai and it takes about 10 mins max to fit.

Easy stuff! well worth the money especially commuting 80 miles at 4.30 in the morning!

Can't really help with the more advanced systems, I know they allow you to add practically everything into the systems for both pillion and rider (separate phones / mp3's etc). The site's pretty good and think it explains all the systems OK.

From my experience, the active plus is great for solo / occasional pillion / bike to bike, my new active 7 smart is the same, great simple bit of kit
(I don't work for autocom!!)

Hope this helps! (if you didn't fall asleep reading)

Yip your right wasnt bothered about bike to bike, just bike powered. I e
intend to hardwire the system under the seat. Like the idea of VOX as ive used an Oxford system before which was open mike and ended up deaf by the end of the day.
Intended use is for occasional pillion and music on the move

Starcom1

have you thought about the starcom1 stuff :D

i have one sat in a cupboard in my garage that could be for sale

it is the kit C which comes with a midland radio and PTT switch, both unused with all the leads, all you would need to replace is the headset, which was an open face one

PM if your interested

Autocom & Starcom

I think that the Autocom & Starcom products are items that most GS riders would like to have on their bikes.

I personally think that most riders have the following issues:

It's very confusing trying to work out which kit and lead etc you need

The "easy fit" instructions are not, and the suppliers don't offer enough technical installation support.

The suppliers would rather have you buy through a dealer than fit yourself - so packaging and instructions is geared that way - even Touratech give laymans instructions!

I would say that the manufacturer that comes up with a "plain english" way of working out what you need + laymans instructions - with technical support (from people who know about the GS) will see a boost in their sales and become the preferred supplier to GS riders.

Also, as an observation, the UKGS'er forum now represents thousands of GS owners, many of which are active members.

I think it’s about time the manufactures offered a special discount scheme to what is one of the largest growing communities on what is the UK's most popular bike.

So come on Startech & Autocom - be brave and give us what we want - no one likes dealer monopolies

I've had both. Starcom on my GS and Autocom on my K1200LT.There are good and bad points with both. With both systems,I use the(far superior) J&M headsets, the boom mic stem being very flexible,as opposed to the stiff-as-a-board stem on both Starcom or Autocom.J&M can supply compatable hook-up leads! Starcom and Autocom don't,or rather, won't!

Starcom instructions are, imo, better than Autocom. Also,Starcom do 20% discount to BMW Club members!

Autocom use standard size din plugs.Starcom use, rather fiddly, mini din plugs.

Whilst almost every manufacturer of intercom systems uses some kind of weather/waterproof socket cover on the lead jacks, when disconnected,Autocom flatly refuse to do so.Even the Honda Goldwing and HD intercoms come complete with these covers. Autocom are right and everyone else is wrong! I don't think so.

When in use,I've had no problems with either(so far)

What will I buy next time,if I have to?

Starcom,but still use J&M headsets.

Thanks

Excellent feedback!

do you get your discount from starcom direct or through a dealer?

When listening to music does the rider and pillion volume need to be the same or can one have low or no volume ?

On the autocom active plus and the fancier models the rider and pillion have separate volume settings.

It suggests that if riding solo to have the pillion turned right down.

Not sure if this is mute or just very quiet at its lowest setting Never moved off full volume
