Which boots should I try out? (big feet, large calves)

Hi all,

Looking to get my first set of adv boots (now i'm getting started in the offroad side of things and I am doing a few courses this year) but not sure what to look for. I want them to be waterproof but not too hot, well protected but not so stiff I can't move/walk in them, and for them to actually fit! I'm a size 12, and have abnormally large calves (mine are more cows than calves) - for road boots I wear Alpinestars SMX5-Plus waterproof but I got them in a 14 to fit the calf well.

Any tips lads?

I really like my Sidi Adventure boots. Great all year round practicality and really comfortable on or off the bike.

Altberg don't make an "adventure" boot, let alone a full-blown off road boot.

One option for large calves is the Sidi Crossfire which has an adjustable calf plate. However, Sidis tend to fit the narrower Italianate foot. I might be a case of trying on as many different off road boots as possible until you find the best fit.

i've found Forma Adventure boots very accommodating, comfy and have done me well for the past 2 years. (they also do a low boot too for huge calfs )

I really like my Sidi Adventure boots. Great all year round practicality and really comfortable on or off the bike.

I love mine as well but they are no good if you have big feet and fat legs !

Yeah I bought a pair of them 2nd hand tho they were like new ..the guy had only done 500 miles round trip ..they are a 45 tho theyre a bit neat round the toe area ,,might try a 46 to see if they are a better fit .. good boots tho I sprayed the grey areas black look loads better

Brown leather seems to be a good look for a big calf.

Good luck with this one buddy, I'm in the same position, I have alt berg hogs, I asked them to custom make me the roadrunner but they couldn't accommodate a 21" calf. To be honest they are a decent road boot but no better protection, for off road.

Yep big feckers. Tried all sorts but still can't find an adventure boot to fit.

Will follow this with thread with interest, I have trawled the internet and most of the threads are quite old and most of the boots have been superseded.

I have a very wide foot and chunky calves. I know strictly speaking my choice won't be considered full blown adventure boots but they are Goretex and very good quality for the money, they are only a 3/4 length boot and the upper section closes with velcro (so very adjustable for your big calves)

Well prompter by this thread, called in at Get Geared Leeds today and asked for someone who could help me that had the patience of a saint, nice guy with a LC GS helped me out, I tried every adventure boot they had in a 12 or 12 1/2 (in Alt berg I take and 11 extra wide), not one closed on the calf, Sidis, what a choice but bloody tight foot fit even in a size 12 1/2.

The Forma Adventure came closest but still not closing on top buckle or velcro top, but they are tall boots. They didn't have the short boot in anything bigger than an 8 but they are getting a pair in for me to try.

I did try on and end up coming away with a new pair of Alpinestar MonoFuse GORE- TEX CE certified Touring boots (size 48) they are about a 3/4 boot, no zips a rear buckle closure and a velcro top. If your struggling for boots and have big legs and ankles the new shaped Alpinstar closure system is worth a try.

I will still take the Forma short boots if they fit as you can see they certainly have more ankle protection which it what I'm looking for for a bit of light off roading. Thanks for the recommendation.
