It is that time when one must change their bikes brake pads.

I am competent enough to be able to tackle this job myself. The question is (and I need your honest opinion) which pads to go for?

  • EBC Double H
  • BMW own

BMW pads will likely cost a fortune but might be better suited for the bike, EBC pads are less messy in the wet as these emit less dust and cost £80 for a complete set front and rear.

What do you lot use?

I was quoted £75 plus for OEM BMW (rear pads only) , apparently specially made for BMW by BREMBO !!!!!! who charge less than half that amount for their own identical pads ,mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm .

If you use any pads rather than BMW then it will be noted on the online bike service record, should any issue arise with the disks or future related problems, I think you'l find BMW have you by the short and curlies....Maybe something to take into account when doing them yourself.

When I part ex'd my last GS, the service manager pointed out the rear pads were not BMW ones to the manager who was costing what work would be required. I pointed out they were recently fitted genuine Brembo pads and he told the service manager they were fine.

im interetested to know how many miles the OEM pads lasted.

Brembo for me

I had this discussion with service staff regarding genuine bmw (brembo made) pads versus genuine brembo made (non oem bmw) pads and how there was no way you could contemplate that Brembo was going to use a different ( either less efficient or potentially more aggresive and damaging sintered compound for their own branded pads).

Having extensive experience with VW/Audi parts that more often than not have both the manufacturers (ie Lemforder/ Mahle/ Bosch/Bilstien or Pagid) part number AND the VAG part number I could not persuade them that other than the colour of the backing plate they would be identical parts........BUT much cheaper

I see your point and will discuss this with my dealer before doing any work to the bike myself, I am pretty sure it'll be ok so long that OEM parts are used. I know a person or two who in some cases bought a brand new motorcycle and had an agreement with the dealer that they would prefer to use their mechanic of choice to carry out any service work. Dealers have agreed to do that so long that OEM parts and approved oils are used during a period of vehicle being under warranty.

I purchased my bike with 9540 miles on the clock and currently it is on 19121 Rear pads are due to be replaced and are (original pads before my ownership) I doubt I got another 1000 miles in them. so to conclude I reccon it is on average 10K for the rear set, but don't take my word for it, as I have no idea whether these pads factory originals or already have been replace before my ownership. Front pads seem to still have some life in them.

I have a friend who works for VW dealership and he said same stuff, I came looking for some pads and disks for my '96 VW polo, and he said to me " in all honesty our pads and disks are identical to Paggid components because they are made at same place just haven't got the markings that VAG stuff does. He said even after friend and family discount it would still be cheaper to buy them from euro car parts of their sister company (online) carparts4less.

Brembo SC every time
Initial bite and braking force better than any of the competion

Brake pads are 'consumables'. If you had a warranty claim on your brakes then they might be interested. If your paint was falling off your swing arm and engine the type of brake pads is of no relevance to the claim.

I recall that RiDe magazine did a pad test years ago and Brembo did best.

Why not email Brembo direct and ask them what the technical difference between their pads and BMW oem are ?
