can someone tell me what brake pads i need for a non ABS 2003 adventure.
should they be sintered variety?
where's the cheapest place to buy?

cheers
Steve. :bow

I'd agree with Micky, go for the original. I replaced mine with a set from a well known company and there was a noticeable wet weather lag in them. Nothing like my GT750 Suzi in the wet but still occasionally buttock clenching. Got a set of originals and put them on - no problems after that. Excellent wear rate as well.

No such thing. Different makes were fitted as OE.

Mine have always been bought from the BMW dealer... and actually have the small BMW logo roundel & part number

Too many times I've seen people fit 'alternatives'... they don't last, don't stop as well, and ofter wear the discs. OK I know there will be those that say different, good luck to them, but with 250,000 miles on the four valve boxers in ten years I wouldn't even contemplate anything less.

No one is fit to recommend any particular type of pad unless they've used all the types themselves, not just "heard on the grapevine"

personally i woudn't touch BMW original pads, i've seen with my own eyes the friction material fall off the backing plate too many times  . Only seen it happen on BMW pads .

I've recently stuck in EBC HH pads. They seem v.good so far with much more initial "bite" than the OE ones. We'll se what they are like after a few more miles but ok so far. :)

I have had the friction material come off on my 1100rs  going very fast into a roundabout £2000 of damage bmw pads :spitfire

I have tried many alternatives to oem pads and the one I'd recommend over any of the others is Carbon lorraine sbk-3. Better bite, better stopping power and great wear rate. Knock ebc hh's into a cocked hat! When my BMW pads need replacing, that's what I will be using.

But does'nt that infer that what ever is fitted on assembly thus becomes OE which is then original.....
I'am on my 3rd owned from new 1150 and all three have been fitted with bmw stamped "one way or another " pads. even on my 1100 with brembo calipers.
Only ever used bmw and ebc pads but never had any problems with either...

Brake Pads''

Thanks for all the replys guys, i have now had a chance to look at all the pads and after being told they were low on the 12k service i must say i am dissapointed with the dealer as i can now report they are only just half worn and in my opinion will hang on another year yet.fronts still have 4mm and rears have 3-4mm left on them, typical dealer ploy thought i would just say replace them well they were wrong, now what shall i buy with that £80 i have just saved.
cheers
Steve.

The friction material fell off one of my admitedly well worn OEM pads @ about 18k and I'm pretty fastidious with me brake maintenance http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38909. Fronts are nearly due for replacement @ 22,500 which is a pretty good wear rate. Stuck Ferodo sintered pads in the rear so will probably try these at the front. :)

Point is, BMW don't make their own pads, so someone make them and they stamp their name on. They're not all the same, from bike to bike, and time to time. They could be Ferodos, EBC, Carbon Larraine, Chinese cheepos, who knows what?

Buying BMW pads don't even mean that your getting the same ones as the last lot of BMW pads you had. Does guarantee that you will pay over the odds though.

I have just had exactly the same happen to me, I said no to them being replaced at the 12K service so I could do it myself MUCH cheaper! on removal the rears were quite worn, but the fronts had plenty (4mm) of life left. I had already bought replacements though :spitfire

The dealer is only suggesting that your pads wil be worn below the manufactures limit before your next scheduled service.

If you intended going around europe after your service and the pads wore out before the end and left you fecked, you'd be moaning about the dealer not changing the pads .

They have to think what your pads will be like in another 6k miles
