Having read a number of threads on RID failures etc. on the 1150 section it seems this issue appears to be more common than I thought. In my case I have no fuel gauge and only 2 and on ocassions 3 bars (sometimes it flashes) for the oil temp. Clock and gear number is functioning properly.

I am starting from scratch following various pieces of valuable advice already on a number of threads.
Checked and removed fuse #3. No change.
I am now in the process of attempting to clean the RID connector behind the headstock. This is my first problem. Which one of the block connectors is for the RID? There appears to be at least 5! I've looked at the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual, checking colours of wires, but I get easily confused.

I've attached a photograph of all the connectors there, so any advice as to which is the RID one would be most appreciated.
With my luck it'll mean a replacement unit anyway(e-bay £75!!) but one needs to go through the logical process first.

Thanks again for any help.

Steve - do you have HID's as this can be the cause of problems if the ballast is fitted too close.

I wood be tempted to disconnect all those connectors, clean with a toothbrush and some electrical cleaner, spray with ACF50 and then put back together.

Also have you checked the wiring around the headstock - it can be cable tied too tight and lead to a broken wire.

No. I should have mentioned this as I'd read in the other posts that there might have been a problem with the proximity of the ballasts.

I've checked the cables around the headstock, as again I have heard that there could be issues of trapped/worn cables here. Nothing obvious that I can see. Looks pretty good if I'm honest but the state of the connector boxes is very dirty. Probaly a lot of sh*t/spray getting under the tank when ridden in poorer weather.
When you say electrical cleaner, is this a specific product. I have heard, in America, of electrical grease/vaseline type product. Thought I'd try some WD40 on a cotton bud but the connector holes are a lot smaller than a cotton bud. I've a couple of spare toothbrushes I can try though.

Thanks for the suggestions Tom. :thumby:

Don't forget the four-way connector by your right knee (under the cover) as it's often the cause of RID problems.

The RID connector on the headstock is the 8 way Grey connector.

That's the one on the top left as you look at the picture? They were all covered in black crap so cleaned a couple with a rag. Just wondering if that one's grey or some colour not found in nature ;)

Thanks for all the comments so far.

I find that breaking and making the connector a few times helps to wear away any small amounts of corrosion build up between the sockets and pins.

Looks like I have some dirty work to do tomorrow.

Many thanks again all for the reassuring assistance.

Just pull the appropriate fuse (no need to mess about with the connectors), replace and you'll be good to go. The problem is surely the location of HID ballasts. Move them (only slightly could be enough) and everything will be OK.

I don't have HID's. I was aware that those with them had experienced problems before. Have cleaned everything now and going back in garage to put it all back together.
Now searching for the procedure for resetting the mototronic unit. Any one with a quick guide?

Well, all that work for nothing. Still no change. Will have to decide whether it's worth changing for another 2003 RID seen on e-bay or just use the orange fuel lamp as a 'time to re-fuel stupid!' indicator.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.

It could be the fuel sender in the tank that needs cleaning with carb cleaner, old fuel leaves a residue over time which breaks the contact. Give this ago before getting a new RID as I made an expensive mistake this way with a 1996 R1100RSSE

But would this affect the temp gauge too? Your comment is logical but I would have thought it shouldn't affect the oil temp reading.
