Which end can?

Hey all,

Using the bike for commuting and want to be heard (but not too much) and don't want to spend a fortune.

What are the recommendations for a mid priced end can for my 800 and what (if anything) should I do to the mapping, or will the ecu take this into consideration?

Myke is right, the oem exhaust sounds good. Without going silly loud you aren't going to overcome the turned up car stereo anyway

Um, I think I get Mykes idea he's trying to get across, but not sure on his delivery.

Why have I spent the last 25 years changing exhausts on *all* my bikes, including 1150s? To (a) make a better sound, and (b) when racing was to improve breathing....
When I hear other 800s with cans on they sound quite good, more aggressive if you like... I don't personally think the standard can is all that special. Why shouldn't I change it?

And mores to the point, I didn't ask why should I keep the std can and please give me your opinion about it, I asked, what people recommend for aftermarket.. See, now my delivery is slipping.

If you go onto youtube and key in f800gs acrapovic, you get a few vids with sound. They are noisier with the db killers out but stock not too different. I have to agree with above, motorists rareley hear you, they are too well insulated.

I use my for warning dozy pedestrians and cyclists, you have to dodge the cars.......I find a quick blip on the trhottle is more effective and less "rude" than using the horn.

I have a Metal Mule, reasonable sound. Nice burble on overrun and quiet enough on A-roads.

I've got the akrapovic bought of an inmate on here. You can come across them cheap enough occasionally, not a lot louder but lovely sound. Never touched the mapping

I'm on the MM / Scorpion; nice sound, louder than stock but not too loud and slimmer into bike for when i use saddlebag. I think the Beowulf offerings were the loudest i heard. I agree with Blag - i think the Akro has the best sound, not necessarily louder than stock, just better tone to it.

Nothing needed re mapping etc.

Akro here, actually bought it with my F650GS complete with the BMW part number, the original was boxed up. sold my F650 with the shiny new original and slipped the 32K miles akro on my F8 no mapping.

Cars are different cant remember the last time I jumped in my car and went for a drive just for fun I know plenty that have a used car with a nonstandard exhaust Essex innit

The original my used F8 came with was OK my AKRO is better

But out of the box its probably quieter than standard, without the baffle it's too noisy

Simples .... take the baffle out, cut it in half, and replace. This way it can always be welded together if you had to, the rear of the exhaust doesn't look as if it's had the baffle removed, 'cos it aint ..... and sounds bloody lovely

Fitted mine when the 'bike was new, six years use, five winters, 108,000 miles and still looks as good as new

Remus for Me

I have never understood why people spend so much money on Akro stuff. Yes they look okay and they can sound nice...but they want How Much?
I have a Remus Hexacone end can mated to a set of Motad non-cat header pipes that make a very nice sound without being antisocially noisy with the baffle removed. All for the same price that Motorrad were asking for the Akro end can.
So what's not to like.

Well I guess that it's all down to personal budgets, spending, choice, available pocket money, priorities and fuck what anyone else thinks old bean

Beouwolf wins on sound against price, Akro may be good but costly.

I like the point about cutting the db killer down on the Akro, good tip. I'd also love one but can't quite stretch to that money at the mo, having just lashed up on the bike and a few toys for it.
I've seen a few MM Scorpions and am keen but never heard one in the flesh so might chance one, I'd be interested in yours Smythson but sadly due to me being in Aus now may make postage prohibitively expensive.

If you know different then I'm all ears.

I too have the Scorpion and it makes a lovely sound. Slimmer than standard - a very good reason to ditch it.

Thanks everyone,
Given a few factors like price and availability here I'm going for an Arrow, Maxi Race-Tech oval ally with carbon tip and removable baffle.
So would've liked an Akrapovic but can't justify the increased cost, Id have had the scorpion if their shipping wasn't so eyre wateringly expensive, twice had it lined up to buy but over 100gbp to ship is unreasonable.
So it's an Arrow, I've always wanted one and now I do. I'll report on fit look and sound when I've got it on the bike.
