I wish to buy some engine bars for my 2010 R1200GS but am a little confused by the choice out there. So I would like the feedback and wisdom of those that have spent their hard earned on them. I've looked at Givi, Hepco & Becker, BMW and SW Motech.

I don't think the BMW ones offer enough protection, the SW's finish doesn't look long lasting and I have no idea on the others fit and finnish. I do like the idea of stainless bars as there is no need to worry about longevity. Any advice will be greatfully received to help me choose the right set.

Over to you!:ukgser

I've had the same set of Givi bars on my 2005 and 2010 by taking them off before trading in the '05. Yes, I've managed to drop both bikes at 0 speed, the last time on ice (in June mind you). Each time the only thing damaged were the crash bars. Twice I've had to weld the upper support on the RH side because the weld broke. Each time I've sanded and painted any scratched areas to make them look like new. So far I haven't had any valve cover damage, but am considering valve cover protectors as a supplement.

I put the H & B bars on mine. The stainless TT ones look good but they're too expensive and I don't reckon they'll give any more protection. Probably less in fact. The H & B bars haven't been tested except for one drop at standstill. They never even budged. (Certainly no need for re-welding!)
Hammerite metallic silver spray is a good match for the paint. I've just tarted them up and swapped them onto my 2010 model.

Just getting slightly off topic, has anyone had difficulty in getting engine bars for the 2010? I got the bike in May and the engine bars (according to the dealer) are on back order with some tale of short supply at BMW. 2 months later and they're still not bloody fitted!

My 1200 SE was specced with H&B bars by its original owner.. they do a good job of protecting the cylinder head , which is why you fit them :)

The head guards don't fit with them, but peace of mind says when its dropped you're doing all you can ;) this just scratched the sticky silvr H&B label :)

I have Hepco Becker bars upper and lower on my bike, had them resprayed in a gun metal. I like the look of them and they do the business (two zero speed drops with only paint work damage to the bars.

Unlike Bryn I CAN get head guards underneath mine, which is odd!

Now that's service, most people post a picture of their engine bars on the bike the RWU. It's nice to see the underside of them for a change. Thanks.:augie
