Right need a bit of help

I have got myself a Garmin Quest (pre-owned), just bought a cradle to go with it, now i have got a couple of questions

First question

How do a mount it on my 1150 ? been looking at the RAM mount and not sure whether to go for the short (RAM-B-149ZA) one or the longer (RAM-B-149Z) one, at the moment i am leaning towards the shorter one

Can anyone who has got a photo of how they have mounted their quest, using one of the above possibly post a picture on here for me to have a look at how the setup looks

Second Question

The quest came with V6 of mapsource, can i upgrade this to a later version, free via garmin's website, or by any other means that is very cheap if not free - a cheek i know

If you look at the RAM mount site for the UK (http://www.ram-mount-uk.com), select picture gallary from the lhs and you'll find there's loads of pics of units mounted on GS's.........

Should help.

Or you can use a migsel mount above the clocks.

For me at least, the Quest is too small to mount above the instruments of a GS, without using a RAM-arm to bring it closer.

Have you thought about mounting it from the clutch reservoir on the LH bar?

Agreed !!

You def need the longer arm for the Quest.

I used this set up on my GSA before I bought my el cheapo 2610.

I've just wired it in and am now using the shorter arm,but the screen size of the Quest dictates that you need the longer arm to bring the screen nearer to you.


Here is what the Ram Wizard recommended for the 1150 :







I use this shim adaptor to mount the Quest/2610 above the clocks on the thinner bar :





You can get all the bits from GPS warehouse.

Their service is v quick and efficient.

Adrian.....you want a Migsel speedo mount you do, with a 2 or three inch ram arm on the end onto whatever cradle you have .

Brings it up into the eyeline (well, just below anyway) and right on the centre line of the bike

Must admit the Migsel mount looks good and alot neater, also gets the GPS unit nearer to your eye level, and i assume i can hide all the cabling under the silver cowling

But as the screen is small on the quest and me being slightly myopic, not quite as bad as Mr Magoo i thought that being on the handlebar would be better for me, but can see the advantages of the Migsel mount

Going to have to ponder this for a while

Have you tried running the Quest with the data fields off????

It increases the useable screen by 30% at least....you still get a big blue arrow anddistance to next event and it's much better ....that, plus the thing right under your line of sight makes it about as good as it gets IMO.

Cheers, i have only just got the thing, still fiddling with the buttons wondering what they all do and reading through the manual, i'm a complete novice when it comes to GPS

Have just ordered a garmin cradle, then the only other dilemer i thought i had was how long a arm i should order, i was going to go for the standard one then thought the short one to stop vibrations and all that, the only thing that puts me off the Migsel mount is the cost, i can get the arm (short) and bracket from GPS wharehouse for £20, and the migsel is 85 euros about £58, plus then i assume i have to get the arm and bracket thing to go on the rear of the cradle

But would appreciate it if you could post a picture, would be great, it might make my mind up either way

If using the Garmin cradle kit, 010-10610-00 it needs AMPS hole pattern mount, if using RAM parts, look at either RAM-B-149Z-Q1 with 3" standard arm or with shorter arm, RAM-B-149ZA-Q1.

It depends where you fit..? on the cross bar, add RAP-319 to compensate for thinner rail .. or as we did on another bike, added a RAM-B-230 and a second arm. Its mechano with balls !

It depends what the previous owner did with regards registration, I assume the unit came complete with all disks etc. and including the yellow card with the unlock code for the V6 mapping that you have? If he/she registered it any time before the 1st of September this year then you will have to pay for an upgrade, about £45. I'm pretty sure that Garmin are good at transferring ownership with regards to unlock codes etc. probably best to give them a ring. However, you may get very lucky like I did and find that the previous owner didn't bother to register at all, in which case you will qualify for a free upgrade to the V9 version of City Navigator. Best to check this route first by setting up a MyGarmin account and attempting to register the unit as if it were new.

As far as I am aware there is currently no upgrade available as we are waiting for V9 to appear in late Jan, you'll have to make do with V6 until then.

This might help you out, just picture it sideways. The 60 Cx screen is exactly the same size as the Quest screen. I devised my own RAM Ball Install. This pic was taken from the seated position on my Adventure.

Xbootie, no probs.. then.. using the combo of the Garmin mount with the Migsel mount, then use RAM-B-202 round base with 4 hole fix pattern (AMPS) to attach onto the Garmin cradle plus short arm, RAM-B-201-A which you mentioned.

Thanks for your call and prompt. The bikes are a Dakar 650 (which shall is used for a tour) and second option is a Ducati S4R Monster.

Much of what has been said, if fitting onto the handlebars, then normal RAM-B-149Z with RAM-HOL-GA15 and QPAC01 (which you say you will use anyway). If the mirror stem could be used to trap inside the threaded stem either a RAM-B-272 (9mm hole) or RAM-B-252 (11mm hole). As to mounting or clamping onto the mirror stem itself, then same mount option, but short arm, RAM-B-149ZA with RAP-319 shim adaptor. I would add a wrap of rubber
around the stem arm, so as I discussed with you. You could when needed swop the cradle/QPAC combo and add a camera with a RAM-B-202A base. You must accept that this could be prone to vibration due to its position/location.

Ducati, The Monster has tubular handlebars, so a RAM-B-231Z. The Quest could be used unpowered for local and inner city trips or if the Quest is to be powered, then you should consider fitting an inline connector set with an inline fuse holder (1.5 Amp ~ do not exceed this rating!!) on both bikes.
