Local mountaineering accessory shop has the Petzl range ( from £35-60 lumens to £64 - 160 lumens) , are they worth it ? Halfords do some HT'S for a around £10 .

Mine came from Homebase. It has two white leds and a red one very small and light with the usual pivoting head. I think it is an ever ready make. much better in every way than my Petzel although that is about 20 years old.

Depends....

Depends on what you are going to be using it for... just pottering around the tent when camping - cheap LED's are ok, bit more serious ie hiking / mountain biking I have the Hope head torch - LED good wide coverage and power can be adjusted to what you need... But its the old saying 'you get what ya pay'

cocked hat

Energiser Extreame Cree Head Torch - about £23 from argos and works on lithium batts. Its the muts nuts and I have used it for night cycling. Has a vari power setting and a red light.

I have also got LED Lenser, Petzl and Silva and IMHO the Energiser knocks them in to a cocked hat.

Alpkit gamma - simply brilliant, I cant see how it could be better, its really bright, got various modes and batteries last ages.

See Alkit.com

No connection just impressed

mmm big statement that, I'll investigate...

surely the beam quality can't be as good as the lenser :nenau

Mmm

My brother used them and I was taking the piss that he goes to Argos. I was very impressed with it. I have a few now. I recon they are the best bang for the buck you can get. The beam is very well directed and the lens gived a very crisp white light. On full power it will last about 1.5 hours, or for ever if you turn the wick right down.

It looks pants when you see on the web site, and a bit flimsy when you handle it, but once you have it on your head its without peer..

B and Q do one about £12, one click on spots, 2 clicks beam spread, 3 clicks spots and spread.

Its pretty good quality for the price, i have it switched on for hours when i am working under cars , its a great help and always puts the light just where your looking .:thumb2

I use head torches a fair bit and will be looking to get a Fenix HP10 for night running (off-road cross country where a good light is essential) when the evenings start to darken. I have a couple or three Fenix hand held lights and really rate them. If your needs are more for close up work then the Zebralight range is for you, no spot as such just a flood beam which is great up to 10ft or so but the light output is smooth and the torch is really small. It does depend on what you use a torch for.

I've had the Energizer head lights and still keep one as a back-up as they are fantastic value and though the beam pattern is not super smooth as a budget option they are robust, bright and batteries last a good long time.

Thanks everyone for the advice , I will be replacing my 25 year old Mag Light ( use itnwhen I go touring ) , I am feed up sticking the torch in my mouth ( slobbering etc) when loading up the bike early mornings , giving a BJ to the torch before coffee is no longer appealing , especially after I chipped my tooth last year on the damn thing. Geting old ?

petzl zipka 2 head torch is one of the best head torches for ona bike camping very small but powerfull go for the 4 led version it has 3 power settings
they can be worn on the head or wrist attach to tent poles or various bits of a bike:thumb

Oh, the irony .... Ask if it's much better than your petzl in 20 years time.

Your petzl will then be 40 years old and still going strong......

Wot he says.

Petzl every time - I have a zipka under my seat on the bike and a tikka always comes camping / walking / fishing etc (bit more comfortable for long term use). Had them both donkeys years and they just work. You can also replace the lenses if you scratch them to oblivion.

I'm looking to replace my Petzl Zipka. I've had it a few years now and it's been a fantastic bit of kit but sadly it's taken a few too many knocks and tends to come apart spilling batteries when I go to put it on or off my head.
I would certainly buy another one but I'll look at those others mentioned. :thumb2

Edit: I've looked at a few online and I think a Petzl Zipka Plus 2 will be my next purchase.
