Which hyper tourer?

I'm in the market for a nice fast faired tourer - in addition to, not as replacement for trusty 1150GSA.


1300GT BMW
1300FJR Yamaha
1400 GTR Kwak

or good 'ol Pan



I tried out 1300GT at Riders this week :drool F*@k me fast- easy to ride and jaw dropping acceleration from 90, but I have doubts about reliability.

Pan OK but 4000 miler service and handling not great

Have yet to try out other 2.

Mike at Cardiff Motorad recommends the Yam.


Any thoughts?
 
I've owned an ST1100 Pan since 2001 and as a tourer it's possible the World's best. It's only fault - well it's MY fault - is it's enormous weight and height. I've dropped her five or six times, all at walking speed. Other than that, they are a cracking bike.
 
From what I've read , I would not trust any of them fully-laden, two-up at very high speed apart from the BMW. Pan might weave at high to very high speeds.
BMW is the most complete all-rounder and is a relative bargain because BMW UK is absorbing the awful sterling exchange rate more than the Japanese importers.
I wish I could get the GT off its bloody centre stand with a degree of confidence - then I'd buy one without even bothering to test ride the others!
BTW the Kawasaki loses twice as many BHP between the clutch and the rear wheel as the BeeEmm. Thus the K1200GT has/had more power at the rear wheel than the 1400GTR.
 
It would come down to the Yam and the BMW for me. Probably the K1300GT on the basis that I'd be able to add it to my other BMW's on the one insurance.
 
Mate of mine is running the Yam. I had a good look round it for the first time the other day, doesn't seem to have the bulk of some of the others and low enough to get your feet comfortably onto the floor.

Haven't ridden it, but he says the acceleration is awsome in any gear. Good looking bike I thought.
 
The Father-in-Law had Pans for years, about 4 years ago he tried the FJR1300 and he's had 2 of the yams since. He does around 20-25,000 miles a year all over Europe and has nothing but good things to say about them.
When he wants to wind it on a bit, it can bloody shift for a big tourer! As KMD says, plenty of power in any gear and all day comfort too.

Far superior in every way then 1300GT(apart from panniers being a tad smaller)
 
Mates just picked a zzr1400 up from Newcastle kawasaki today.......

my bro has a zzr1400 and I have a k12s

both verry quick and equally reliable over the last 2 years - my dad had mine before me...

bear in mind he is 6'4" - but one ride on the bmw and he is looking at a k12s for touring on- he tried the gtr and the gt - both too big and heavy (neither too slow notice0

the fjr1300 is fantastic, owned one since december, goes really well, handles well (once you adjust the suspension from default feartherbed positions)
and has a good riding position....ridden with top box and panniers, no problems....only drawback so far has been knckering a front tyre in 2400 miles!!!:eek: the bridgestone 021 that many of these are fitted with as oe new is crap....have a look at fjrowners club forum....once got rid off the bike is much better....funnily enough the 021 rear is fine (wtf?)

When you said 'Hyper Tourer' i assumed you meant Blackbird/ZZR/K1200 S etc. There are some good deals to be had if you just want a 'mile muncher'. Saw a PC800 on Ebay last week, went for 1600 quid, that will last forever if looked after, and it's not a bad machine!

Had 5 Bird's, fantastic machine, if a little heavy.

ZZR's, ridden a few, 1400 is the one to go for, all the other suffer with Kawasaki 'panel rattle/squeak, corrosion issues, etc....

K12/1300 S, like the bird only faster, more agile, better on fuel, much faster, shaft drive, good enough luggage, much, much faster, better looking, did i mention they were faster?

BMW all day long.........
 
What are peeps views on the reliability of the 1300GT?

Wife thinks I should do deal with BMW as they are giving fair price for Z4*

p.s. *anyone want a lovely 3.0 SE Z4 42k miles dark metallic grey soft top?

p.p.s I love how devious us men can be, start off wanting a 2nd bike and with the right moves can achieve the "Oh, just buy the bloody thing!" in about 3 weeks if we are careful ;-)
 
Was thinking same as smudger about the 'hyper-tourer' status but there is one bike missing from the list, the 'ONLY' hyper tourer.

I owned one for 6 years and toured regularly through Europe, including blast round Nurburgring. The bike - Suzuki Hayabusa. Unrivalled speed, good MPG (for the speed), comfy pillion seat, etc, etc. I suppose the only negative would be the lack of hard luggage available but I used soft luggage, tank bag and packed fairly light!!!!!

Other than that and if I wasn't bothered about the 'hyper-tourer' status it would be a Yam or ZZR1400GTR.
