Guys, wife and I share a zumo660 on my bike or in her car. But our holiday this summer is going to start with us making our separate way to Carcossone, me on bike with a group of guys and her and our daughter driving the car down a day behind the bikes.
So what we're after is a second sat nag for the car, so the question is , is there a cheaper version of the 660 that's sets up the same way, same maps etc, that she can have in the car?

We use a Nuvi 765T in the car. I used to use this on the bike in a waterproof case. Fairly similar to the 660 in terms of spec and works, to all intents and purposes, the same way. Unfortunately no longer in production though they do crop up on eBay occasionally.

However, I'm not sure if your question is inferring that you're intending to use the same mapping (i.e. the licence across the two devices) as that won't work. The mapping unlock is specific to the GPS and you'll need a 2nd licence for the 2nd Garmin. Buy a Lifetime mapping subscription for £50 from Handtec and you'll be sorted, you only need the mapping installed once on your PC though you will need to unlock it for both devices. When updating you will need to update each device independently and the PC once.

Is the 765 an old model? Looking on Amazon they do a 2595 which looks similar to our 660, comes with lifetime maps inc Europe which sounds ideal for the car. £140:nenau
I know I need two licences for two units, will look into the suggestion for updates for my 660.

Depends, how similar is similar in your view?

Compared to the 660 and looking at the specs it lacks MP3 player, 3D Buildings (eye candy and not worth bothering IMHO), no audio out via 3.5mm jack. I doubt if it has the 2 channel Bluetooth of the 660. However as a car navigator it looks pretty good.

The built in Traffic will probably only come with subscription for UK and France, not all of Europe. Don't expect this to be as good as TomTom Live Traffic, it only covers main roads and in my experience isn't too reliable. Then again I tend to stick to minor roads so am not one to pass final judgement.

With Lifetime Maps built in to cost(updated from t'interweb)

Handtec do it - you can get the £50 Lifetime update for the Zumo 660 too from these guys, then you'll have both models sorted for Life(aka a very long time anyway)

:beerjug:

Thanks fro this, likeing the look of this one.

Bumpkin, We don't use the mp3 on the 660, or the audio output(although I should connect it to the Autocom really, just prefer to look at the screen), so wouldn't need them for the car anyway. Not sure about the 3d buildings bit, need to look into that. Don't use the Bluetooth either. TBH, the 660 is way better than we need on the bike even.:blast

As for similar, just in the sense that either of us can pick up either unit and use it in much the same way without having to remember basic differences in the set up etc. Never particularly liked sat navs, hated the 2610 we had before, but the 660 has impressed me, but I still don't trust them, and will always go somewhere knowing where i'm going and just use it to confirm things.

If it's familiarity in use I'm not sure if it has the same UI as the later Zumo 350 as this differs from the 660 quite a bit. Worth checking that out if you want it to work in the same way as the 660 in respect of menus and buttons.

Have a look on youtube for reviews that cover the UI... here you go, looks like it's different. Whether it's too different is up to you.

If you are open to other suggestions, Halfords are doing brand new TomTom 1005's with a capacitive touch screen, EU mapping, Lifetime updates and 3 years of live subscription thrown in (normally £47.50 per year) for £199.

It's expensive (not when compared to Zumo's I think) but is a fantastic unit, with live services built in with it's own Sim Card, making it easy to use local search for food / fuel etc, does bluetooth hands free and takes a micro SD card.

I picked one up this weekend as I was so fed up with my built in nav and am really impressed with it

No wish to hijack the thread but if you are going to France please make sure that Speed Camera Alerts are switched off for you both else the fines are supposed to be heavy if you shouild get stopped. :thumb

Buy the cheapest new Garmin that includes European mapping (such as a Nuvi 1390T at £99 on eBay 121128502959).

You get one free map upgrade - use it. Give the unit to your wife to use. Sell it on eBay as soon as you get back.

Total cost maybe £25 ....

If you don't want her to get lost, make sure she knows how to spell Carcassonne.
