Which of the ‘luxuries’ have I found work well and are worth taking?

My little luxury
I have a sheepskin seat cover on my seat and when camping, I stuff it into my Exped schnozzle bag, used to pump up the airbed, and it makes a cracking pillow. It also means that the cover doesn’t get damp as it would left on the bike.

Absolutely not, you don't need any kind of satnav, but some seem reluctant to travel far without one.

By the time you worked out a route, wrote it up and positioned it into your tankbag i would be a day's ride ahead of you.

Don't get me wrong, maps are fine and i have a subscription to OS and all their maps to print if i need them (more for hiking tbh) but i think a GPS is quicker and more convenient.

I remember travelling nearly 30 years ago, to Berlin and former DDR on my new R1100GS

It was an adventure and we camped in a former East German sector camp with watchtower etc

Just a tent and other sundries for camping basics
*No mobile phone
*No sat nav
*No power leads/powerbanks and jump leads
*My navigation was a Michelin map of each country, in a Baglux A4 mapcase & secured to a Baglux harness
* no Booking.com or pre booking anything - needed to stop and find a hotel ? Park up and go an ask for a room (we found some great hotels that way)

It was simple and pure, motorcycle touring in the 1980’s and 80’s

Now we’re hamstrung by constant communication needs and GPS shite

In reality none of it is necessary

Maybe not necessary JB but very useful. I can recall a trip to Germany 15 years ago when my pal had an early Zumo. The ability to nip though a congested Stuttgart to the campsite near the city centre was an absolute boon and a revelation at the time.

Absolutely agree with this.
Definitely more of an adventure in those days.

Indeed
We had a great time and didn’t get lost, even in big cities
Read the signs and follow a map
GPS is good, but has its limits and the human brain can work it out faster than the algorithms

When I’m tired and soaked and pissed off I’ll take a gps to find

33 Rue De Middleofnowhere

every time thanks.

Windproof inner shell base layer jacket handy if the temperature drops, rainy day etc.

EDZ used to do one but there will be others, packs down into size of glasses case and fits in a jacket pocket.

Where’s your sense of adventure?
Cold and tired ?
Just stop at the first hotel you come across and walk in
None of this prebooked nonsense 🙃😂

10 hrs 50 mins of adventure …..

10 mins on gps to find a shower and porcelain poo.

That ratio works for me

(Shower and poo in different cubicles )

Always have one of these in my tank bag just in case. Great bit of kit. I even have the EDZ pants too :D

These days I use a Klim Zephyr a lot of the time. Does a great job but doesn't pack anything like as small as the old EDZ does...

Instead of the Oxford Mondial jacket liner, I bring a cheap Penneys (Primark) 20 euro puffer jacket. Actually more effective than the liner, and doubles up as wearable gear when off the bike. Puffer jackets compress right down so they don't affect flexibility when worn, and they pack away nice and small.
