Which of the 1150 series had non-servo ABS brakes?

I know my 2000 is non servo non-abs and then the servo abs came in, but did the servo eventually give way to non-servo abs or is that still a 'modification' you do yourself by de-servoing?

Just wondering.

My 2004 R1150GS ADV was non ABS, and consequently sans servo. I think it was an option but someone older than me with more experience may know more.

Obviously the older and wiser purchasers' opted for a conventional braking system. :thumb2

My 2003 R1150GS ADV is non ABS, and consequently sans servo. :aidan

My 2002 (Jan) standard 1150 has Evo calipers etc but non servo abs:JB

My 2003 is servo ABS - I think that servo ABS continued through to the 1200, so the only way to go non-servo was to go non-ABS from about 2003 to whenever the 1200 changed away from servo.

1150 GS, Sept 2002, ABS but no servo. HTH

IIRC.........

September 2002 build onwards had Servo-ABS. Any 1150's from that point to the end of production that had ABS, had servo-assist.

Rule of thumb is Twin-Spark models have servos (if the bike has ABS).

There was a change in the brake callipers too but I'm not sure whether that happened at the same time (earlier versions are marked Brembo, later ones are marked BMW).

Change of calliper pre-dates the addition of servo.

Except for the short lived tokico BMW badged caliper, which takes the long slim pad ( and has slimmer brake discs) and came in with the servos and was used for a couple of years at the same time as the almost identical BMW badged caliper, which was used on both the servo and non servo and is still in use today on the 1200GS.

So if you want a non servo ABS you'll be looking at a pre 2003 bike.
I've seen both versions on 2003 bikes, obviously as the dealers sold off old stock.

Thanks for that Neil. Were the later servo bikes improved over the early servo's. There seemed to be a lot of people who didn't like the servos that were fitted for various reasons but you don't hear that about current bikes.

Reason for the interest was the idle notion of upgrading one day when money's not as tight to an adventure, but then wondered about year/version etc and the servo seems to be the only thing people didn't really like.

I've always been happy with non-abs but the older I get the more it seems like a good idea, so figured I'd start enquiring about which systems worked and which didn't.

Thanks.

.

All the 1150 models have the same servo - the 1200 models had servo changes through the servo model life.

Happy to have a 2000 ABS non servo...

As for new system IMHO it's still crap and is one of the reasons I sold my K1200GT and went back to the GS, steaming down on a smallish roundabout in France got the yellow triangle and VERY little brakes:eek:

Go and wash your mouth out at once!!

My 2003 GSA was built with no ABS/Servo as the new owner wanted " old skool " and no crash bars and the 21 ltr tank.[which suits me]
So who knows what's under the fuel tank and remember lots of folks have had the opp to remove U/S servo's etc ;)
