After refusing to pay £16+ a litre for the 10w-50 fully synth at BMW dealer and Halfords did a web search and found-
moto-oil.co.uk

They have it on sale paid £81.48 delivered for 2x4 litres, which came in 8 x 1 litres so same sort of price Tesco were doing. Quick delivery, well pleased. No connection just a satisfied customer

Sorry to all those who only read the first part of the header and looked in to give it some:aidan

Get yourself a Halfords trade card and it's much cheaper still for Castrol

The Rider's Manual, page 148 states -
API SF or better. ACEA A2 or better. Do not use semi synth for the first 10K miles. Viscosities are listed on page 149.

If the R1200GS was as fussy as some would have us beleive, the book would be more specific.

My last bike used JASO MA. I got 20 litres of Castrol 4T Scooter oil for £1 a litre. It was JASO MA spec so in it went.

This might not suit the Beemer (probably - cue long discussion mods please delete if it does), but would have happily gone into my Yamaha and chances are I would use it in the Beemer as it's now got well over 10K on the clock.

Get yourself a Halfords trade card ...

People keep saying this like it's easy! I tried and failed, despite the fact that I had my own ltd. co. at the time. Unless you can prove that you are active in repairing/trading vehicles, they will tell you to run away!

Ah yes, good old Moto Oil.

If Hitler was still alive it's who he would buy from.

I keep banging on about Coma Sonic 20/50 API SL, cheap as chips! if you want to pay more for oil carry on :nenau

So, your paying £10 a litre? I just bought some nice Castrol 20-50 (semi synth) at my local bike shop for £5.99 a litre which is more than enough for the old ditch pump :thumb Not wanting to open up old threads but I thinking you are wasting your money with fully synthetic if you are changing a 6k.

My 1200 GSA is due for its 12000 miles service, rang two local stealers for quotes and was told the spec has changed from Castrol 10-50 Fully synthetic to 15-50 Castrol trizone semi synthetic, they agree I can supply my own, anyone recommend any good deals ?

google trizone and it suggests its main sell is ability to protect engine, gears and clutch, is yours a WC model which I believe is wet clutch or are they trying to sell us all something we potentially don't need

No, mine is a 2012 model, but this makes me doubt the competence of the service department once again, I did prompt the question that I already have a stash of the 10-50 full synthetic, any problem with using that ? "I dont know sir, bring it along with you".

Why would it now be a problem ? If it was good enough before its good enough now. Use it up it will be fine.

to be fair it might need some discussion with the dealer, it maybe the only Castrol oil on offer now that's right in other areas, but equally there could be a non trizone still available that's cheaper, which they may not know of or are choosing to ignore, or as suggested take your stash, I think you will win the day

Of course they are. One oil recommended equals money changing hands. Also have T140v. Another ancient air cooled twin with wet clutch. 75,000 miles using any 20/50 oil, last 5 years Lidles finest . No problems, everything well within tolerances ( but I did add paper element oil filter to replace old gauze top hat.)

That's my thoughts on the matter, I suppose I just get paranoid that they may look for any excuse to honor warranty work if the case arises.

My Yamaha 900 made 90bhp so hardly anymore stressed than the BMW boxer engine. It did at least 20K on car semi synth turbo diesel engine oil (after the Castrol MA ran out). The clutch started to slip at 70K but the plates were below the wear limit and the new clutch (£50 with springs) was absolutely fine. All the guff about bike specific oil is IMHO just (yet) another way to fleece the hobby biker. Turbo diesels hit the oil with high pressures and temperatures so should be more than good enough.

The Yammie cams and bearings still had honing marks after 70K so the oil must have been acceptable.
