My mcafee subs are up and I need new protection, which would you recommend as best value for money?
I want more or less what mcafee offer but just want to know if there's a better (cheapskate) option.

Virus block
Spyware protection
Hacker protection
Spam protection
Dodgey website advisor
etc etc

mcafee offer this for $40.00, anyone know of a better offer?
thanks

in today's web world, a money's no option approach for protecting you and your equipment is the best approach IMHO, get something that covers all the bases so to speak....firewall, anti hack/virus/spyware, encryption to protect files, passwords and the like....MacAfee, Norton it's all good I would have thought...I use a Mac so have different kit running on my machine....:mac

my recommendations...

if you want to do things (very adequately) for nothing. get AVG Free edition for anti-virus and Zone Alarm Free firewall.

if you want to pay, get Eset NOD32 0r Kaspersky for AV and Zone Alarm Pro.

if you want to pay lots, get a mac.

For a modest payment, the paid for AVG has much more frequent updates and more features than the free version, they also do a internet security version that includes a firewall and spyware detection.

Although I prefer to use a separate firewall such as Agnitum or Kaspersky as well as the AVG.

I can vouch for the free AVG, far better than Norton, it doesnt slow your machine down or interfere with any programmes, and unlike Norton/Mcfee is easy to remove.

I recently went over to the paid version of AVG and it gives even better protection and at a better price than the big two

virus stuff

JUst how much do you value you pc and all contained therein? AGV 8.0 @£39.99 is the best value around I have been using AVG Free for a few years and got rid of Norton, it caused more problems than enough, Mcafee aint worth a light. "there are other virus software available" Pete

I will go against the grain, Mcfee and Norton are crap, in recent tests they came out bottom in most of them for virus and spyware detection.
Go with kaspersky its currently the best there is

i thought i'd look up some reviews...

...and then i remembered i'm using a mac :blast

i do have NOD32 on 2 PCs though :augie

I was running AVG free edition quite happily, but I've just has my brother set up a new Norton system on my machine and it's running very well. I've just got to sort out the identity safe and log in stuff before I can get the best out of it.

Fortunately for me, my brother 'used' to do technical support for a small publishing company, and still looks after a few dozen computers that belong to friends and family.

The best bit about my Norton OEM is that it cost me the grand total of £16.10... my bro knows the local distribution warehouse :bounce1

that's exactly £16.10 too much (not counting what you'll have to bung someone to take it off again later) :D

thanks everyone who took the time to reply.
I'm gonna use AVG and Zone Alarm.
cheers
