Which Radiator Protectors?

Admired a grey water cooled 1200 during an IAM slow riding course this weekend, noticed it has a pair of Mark Hootons rad guards on it. Closer inspection showed a loose stone chipping loitering against the stone guard which I removed. The owner will never know how lucky he is to have fitted those rad guards.

Interesting. Was the stone chipping caught between the guard and the radiator? Would it have gone on to damage the radiator if you hadn't removed it?

These look the bizz in stainless, are rock solid, and are a piece of piss to fit...

12000 miles of road riding since March 2013 and no damage from stones to my radiators - unless you do lots off road riding or just like the bling effect there is no need to for radiator protectors on the LC nothing gets thrown up that high.

I went with Hornig. I wanted minimum bling, good airflow, max protection.

It's not what you throw up, it's what the vehicle in front throws up. If you ride with other bikes regularly then you'll most likely be riding in a reasonably close group, and you're a prime target ...

From looking at some of your previous posts I can see why you haven't holed your rad even with your incredible 12,000 miles per year bad ass, flat out 2`s up with panniers etc riding skils: -

Iirc Charlie Boorman's GS, that he did his high speed runs on the Bonneville salt flats, had salt caked on the lower halves of the radiator, so any stones that get into the air flow will score a direct hit.

Yes, that's why I don't want to take the chance for the sake of 50 quid. It's the cars and bikes in front that represent the biggest stone chucking risk. Seen it so many times happen to mates.
