Been for a hoon with a couple of work mates today, and washed the bike when I got back ....
The pictures don't do the indentation justice - it's a whole deep thumb print and may well have ended up with roadside recovery if it wasn't for the guards.
From looking at some of your previous posts I can see why you haven't holed your rad even with your incredible 12,000 miles per year bad ass, flat out 2`s up with panniers etc riding skils: -
You probably have no mates to kick up stones and shit...
Common sense should tell you, that there is always a chance with an exposed radiator that it may get struck and holed by either, something that is thrown up from another vehicle,or something thrown up from the bikes front wheel.
Only a fool would not purchase radiator protectors, and in fact I find it hard to believe they are not standard equipment.

I get where you are coming from but how many bikes come fitted as standard with radiator guards and how often do radiators get holed? I think that they are not standard equipment because they are not really necessary unless you ride in a group on stony tracks and then it makes sense to fit them - that's my opinion.
P.S do BMW sell them as a standard accessory for the LC?

I have seen very few bikes with radiator guards on, and a lot with more exposed rads than the GS, my Moto Guzzi V11 for example and I have never thought of putting a guard on it.
There must be something about BMWs and the owner culture that want to adorn their bikes with additional 'stuff'.
I also fell into that category when I bought my first GS...........
