To be fair I reckon the nail's been hit on the head earlier in the thread.
Whether a Garmin is the right thing does very much depend on what you want it to do.
If you want to use it as a tool to get you from A-B by the most sensible route, using the parameters you've set it to, and you want it to do the routing, then forget it. I've yet to see a Garmin take anything but the most ridiculous routes on a very frequest basis (and I have a BMW Navigator). I stand by my earlier comment - steer well clear if you want to use it as an ordinary sat nav.. If this is what's needed get a Tom Tom.
As for you putting your own routes in? I can't comment as this isn't what I use mine for - sort of defeats the object IMO but we're all different with different needs. If this is what you want then it sounds like the Garmin's the tool for you.
