I need help !

Given all the current offers at Halfords etc.
Which Sat Nav would you recommend for the car ?
The unit needs to be easy to use only needs to cover UK and be able to be moved from one vehicle to another.
My last car had sat nav installed , wasn't the easiest to use so need something that is easy and clear.

Please advise what unit should I buy and where from, ie are there cheaper places than Halfords ?

Garmin or TomTom. Your local Halfords should be able to demonstrate a few for you. I've never seen a unit available to play with in Comet/Currys/Argos etc (and yes, I do work for Halfords). Pick one of these brands determined by which one suits you better. If budget is critical there are cheaper units from most retailers but in reality you do get what you pay for. On-line retailers often beat high-street shop prices but buying over the counter means that you see the unit you buy before money changes hands and, in the unlikely event of a problem, you take it back rather than posting it back.

got a 550 zumo on me bike. doesn,t find as many addresses as me tom tom . and is harder to follow. slower to use. on a recent trip to the alps, tom tom was used a few times when zumo lost the plot

This suprises me. Some time ago I spent six months multi-drop driving 7.5. tonne trucks and used my Garmin 2720. Then it was nicked and for about two weeks I used a Tomtom Rider. It was horrible. Although the method of entering addresses was easier it often got the location wrong but more important I discovered that all the bad press about satnavs sending trucks through little villages was Tomtom's fault. Also it often suggested turning right at no right turns where the Garmin knew the turn was not allowed and found a route around it. On a few occasions it suggested routes going the wrong way on one way streets. These problems are easy to overcome on a bike but a sod in a truck.

After two weeks I bought a Zumo. What a breath of fresh air.

There're two clear divided camps these days, Tom Tom or Garmin, bit like cars Ford man or Vauxhall man myth.

FWIW, I prefer Garmin always have, if the device has a dual life, bike and car then Andy makes the point, if its car only then look at Garmin Nuvi, even the simpest nuvi 200 can offer speed camera info, easy to use and great little units.

As to where to look Halfords deals are eye catcher myths.. lesser known brands are heavily discounted, main stream brands are tinkered with.

I would look at Amazon first :augie with my inside hat on, then watch.

I got a cheap Garmin Nuvi 205 for under £100 which is a straightforward easy to use basic unit.

The good feature with it is that it has a memory card slot so you can retain the pre-programmed maps in the internal memory and add other maps via memory card, a lot of the cheaper units don't have this feature.

I use a Garmin Zumo 550 on the bike, and until recently used it in the car too. When I'm driving I really do like to know what the traffic is like on my route so I bought the 550 with Garmin's FM traffic accessory. It works - but the traffic data are often plain wrong. A couple of weeks ago I bought a TomTom 'XL Live' (£169 from John Lewis online, incl UK and rest of Europe). The traffic info on this is brilliant, far better than the Garmin service. Only downside is that you have to pay a monthly sub of £8 after the first 3 months. So if you live or travel through traffic-congested areas in a car then I'd give a big :thumb2 for TT's HD traffic service.

For the bike, the Zumo is definitely the device of choice.

Garmin Nuvi 300T - less than £90 @ Tesco

Great units for the car and hard to beat.

FM transmitter to receive traffic updates and divert you round roadworks/accidents

I would second the Garmin Nuvi range been using them for years and they are great. Like the fact they have their own internal battery and you can use it for short periods where you have no access to power.

I use the Zumo 550 from the bike. Its excellent and I am familar with it. Car kit came from this site for 40 earth pounds. No complaints with this unit. Top kit.:clap
