Which screen?

Hi,
I have had a search on the forum but cant find much of an answer.
I have soon found out that the standard screen on a 1200GS is crap - no news there I bet (why the hell dont they just put ADV screens on?)
Is there any concensus on what replacement is viewed to be a good one or one to avoid? I dont want to pay top dollar for the BMW replacement and can see a number of much cheaper versions available elsewhere.
Any pointers would be useful from riders who have changed and glad they have or wished they hadnt?

i have tried the MRA vario screen for some time now and found it to be a lot
better than the standard one but the best improvement to wind protection is a set of WINGLETS.£34 and i have now re fitted the STD screen.

I have also found out through messing around with various height and tilt angles is that with the taller settings to the screen height the bike does not turn as quickly .

Adding the BMW winglets is probably one of the cheapest and best mods, I then added a GIVI screen which suits me fine.

I too find the standard one fine, but I'm only little. Bit of a sweeping generalisation to say the standard screen is crap. Horses for courses and all that.....

Changed mine to a NN SH SW and love it. Make sure you are tall enough to see over the top of it though. I reckon you would need to be a minimum of 5'11", unless you have it angled right back.

Slightly bigger Black one from NN. I'm an average 5'-8". Standard one wasn't too bad for me, but I just wanted BLACK.

Hi,

I first had the NN slightly larger screen, but it still gave a lot of wind blast, eventually went for the GSA tinted, best wind protection for me and looks way better

Some useful pointers there! Sorry if I insulted the standard screen but I think I meant it was crap for me being a tall bloke. I'm sure if you can sit low enough it would be fine as it is a nice looking and well made screen. The GSA screen certainly looks nicer than most of the aftermarket jobs. Winglets seem to get the vote as well.
I'll save me pennies!

Try removing the screen first - I did and found I preferred the bike that way. Now I just have a flyscreen. Try doing a search for "wunderlich flowjet"

Agree with LBL totally.. I have the larger NN one as it was a significant saving vs the ADV one (£80 vs 300)... Should not have bothered as its £80 too many.. Now I m ordering an ADV, so the total damage will be 380...

The expression: "there is no free lunch" exists in 115 languages apparently...

In Greek we also say that "cheapstuff is only worth if dogfood.." I guess Greeks dont like dogs though... !

Spend the cash, get the ADV one... *(try to find a salvaged one/ebay etc)

All the bits and pieces come striaght from your local BuMW dealer, Cost me about £280 with the tinted screen.

I'm happy with the NN one I've got but those adventure screens really put it in the shade looks wise. very nice.

took mine off and it is great ,however not tried it in the rain , might feel a luxury when i put it back on .looks good to .lost that honda 90 70s look .might invest in a small screen to cover the clocks and take a bit of wind blast away .

I`ve a MRA Vario too with Tobinators so I can get the height and tilt of the screen just right, I`ve also got a standard cut down screen that I`ll be cutting down a little shorter too

The OEM screen drove me mad with buffeting and turbulence, so I found these solutions work for me :

1) Wunderlich Extreme Screen : 10 cm = 4 inch higher than original, with a round shape. This screen does the trick perfectly, but is only used in cold weather or on really long highway stretches.

2) Wunderlich Flowjet : actually like riding on a naked bike, full wind blast, but turbulence free. That's my preferred screen, the bike seems smaller, lighter, dare I say supermoto, anyway more playful. As soon as temperature goes up I'll be putting it back on.

Bizarre but true

Couldn't agree more with the suggestion that the best screen is 'no screen'! My naked Megamoto and GS1200 are like chalk and cheese for buffeting - the naked wins hands down. So the screen will be coming off the GS and maybe substituted with a bikini to tidy the cockpit.
